battery terminal is melting!

Battery has been on the charger. turn the key n try to start the bike its turning over n clicking alot. and the terminals r smoking but the positive side post is pitting/melting and the wires on the positive side r really hot. any help.
p.s battery reads 12.3 and 11.8 when i push the starter.

Better load check that battery, sounds kinda weak to me...

If you don't have your own load tester, take it to an auto parts store and have them do it, they don't charge ya to do it...

Make sure all wires are clean and tight. Including grounds. Poor cone tion will cause this to happen.

X2, loose connection and low amps = increased resistance = HEAT!!!

Here is the way i put wires on battery terminals on my Dog.My positive terminal melted one time. With all wires together it was not that tight. They stay good an tight now... new battery an get wire tight you should be fine. pic att 2

I just scraped the spacer that goes on the battery terminal and cleaned up the terminal and cleaned the post n tried to start it and no smoke but it did not start but now I think the battery just needs more charging.

How long did you have that battery on the charger before trying to start it the first time? Your battery may not be strong enough, just saying...

Probaly the best thing to do is put a battery in it and put a battery tender on it at all times. Low voltage is very hard on electrical equipment and not a good thing on these bikes it will pay in the long Run to throw a new battery in and keep it on the tender when your not riding.Others will probaly agree.

Lots of members are running a Braille through the group buy. If you don’t what to do that, go to your local Harley dealer and get a soft tail battery. Seems members have had good success with them. Haven't heard of many putting in WAL-MART batteries...

Walmart batteries are only good if your broke down 100 miles from home I've had to resort to using them but only because I was stranded with a bad charging system.Otherwise there terriable cheap batteries .

yae i think they may be the problem cause these batteries r not lasting long. and the other day i had it on the tender overnite and took it off in the morning and put the meter on it two days later n it read 8.5 on the multi meter could that be the battery or could ther be anything simply to look for that could have drained it that fast.

Unless you have an alarm system, there shouldn't be anything on the bike that would drain the battery over two days. Take the battery out of the bike, charge it, and check it after two days. If you can do a load test while it is out, that would quickly identify a battery issue also.

I melted a battery by it not being tight. Won't do that again.

Crap battery I had one and it didnt last 6 months and always on a tender.
