Remove negative first
Wrap a rag around it
Remove positive cable
Wrap a rag around it
Remove battery
Put in new battery
Remove rag from positive
Connect positive
Remove rag from negative
Connect negative
Also just because your Batt is new does not mean it will be up to full charge. After you install it make sure you hook up your battery tender. You can also hook the Batt tender up to the new one before you install it. The Batt tender will go in to storage mode when fully charged.
I would use a star washer. If you use a little loctite, it will be ok. Too much and you are affecting the connection area of the threads. Good battery connections are important if you have an EHC.
does the main ground connector have to be the first toucnhing the battery terminal directly? Im having starting problems...and thinking maybe that could be it
Just my $.02...
I put a little bit of Purple (low strength) LocTite in the female threads so as not to get it between the cable and the post.
Seems to work.
