I have a 2002 Pitbull installing a new battery. There are 5 cables. Do the 2 small cables connect to the positive? Reason i'm asking is i tried to start my bike with a new battery & the positive post melted. Want to make sure i don't ruin another battery. My cables are all in good condition.

Might be a little late know but I put a plastic tie on my cables whne I pull a bat. Somebody may have a diagram or be able to tell you whats what!

I called the Big Dog dealership they told me they couldn't tell me how to connect the battery without seeing the bike. BS!
I know someone on this forum knows how to do it. Help appreciated!

V, I do the same.
Redflames02, you might want to pick up a BDM Service Manual. They got a wiring schematic right in them. That should help you sort it out. They aren't all that expensive. Got mine on eBay.

a replacement battery may be the least of your worries... if it was connected wrong & melted a battery post I would want to know what else was fried.......... did any wires melt? lucky it didnt catch on fire.....

No damage to cables at all. I shut the bike down right away. I think i may have had some wire's touching causing the meltdown.

Well i figured out the problem why the battery positive post melted. The battery tender that i had connected had a bad positive wire which created the spark. It was a HD battery tender. Took the battery tender off installed the battery & it runs perfect. My connections i had made were correct before.
Kind of stupid that the tender was supposed to keep my battery charged instead i melted it. :down:

I got a HD tender plug on mine never had a problem, mine alsp has a fuse inline just incase.. that might be a good thing if yours dosent have a fuse to install one..gald it didnt harm anything,, but to melt the terminal off that was alot of amps.....

So the battery connection just came loose and got hot?

If so, its not the fault of the wires... you just need to stay on top of these things.

Your right it wasn't screwed in tight. There's alot of bolts that come loose on a rigid. Had to tighten them several times on bottom of case.
