Baker DD6 getting hung up in 3rd

First off I will introduce myself cuz I know you guys like that kind of stuff haha, I have been working on all kinds of motorsports vehicles for the past 6 years, I recently graduated MMI in Phoenix on the metric side, was offered a dream job in an Harley and Big Dog shop, I did very well in school but am still learning the standard side of things and am the only one in this new shop... ANYWAYS...

I am having trouble with a Baker DDR6 6 Speed Transmission on a 2008 Big Dog K-9

It came in with trouble not being able to shift up into 3rd

After diag I found a bent shift fork and shift rod, After replacing them it shifts all the way but gets hung up in 3rd on the way up and back down, I have checked and double and triple checked all measurements as far as shift linkage, clutch, shift pawl, all gear spacing free play, shaft run out ect..

Baker has helped out alot and as much as they can without actually just rebuilding the whole transmission but they are stumped as well

If anyone here has seen or know of anything further to check that would be much appreciated, thnx so much

Mine started getting hard to shift into third, going up or down and finally got stuck in third gear. Sent it back to Baker and they told me my countershaft had moved. This was on a 06 model and Welcome aboard.

I just took it out and am sending it into Baker for the 12 step diag, hopefully they can find the problem and let me know so next time I see the same problem I can diagnose a bit better and quicker

Thnx for the reply

If anyone else knows of ANYTHING or has advice or if you come across anything else please let me know THNX

Check the clutch hub/carrier assembly for run-out as well. I have 2 bent carriers that caused me to bend a couple of shift forks and the shift rod. Going to replace it with the Bandit set up and hope this solves my problems.

The BAKER transmission in your BDM is a BAKER RSD6 Speed designed specifically for the BDM Motorcycle co .
*NOT* a DD6 (simple mistake-no big deal at all):D

The DD6 is a "Direct Drive" 6 speed replacement drop in builders kit -or gearbox setup-that can be installed in a H-D case in 1990 to 2006 FLT/FLH/Softail/FXR or Dyna ~ or as a complete Transmission to drop into a FL ,FXR or Dyna Harley Davidson.

1st thru 3rd gears are straight cut(spur) for strength during maximum acceleration with NO axial thrust.4th & 5th are are automotive style helical gears for a quiet & smooth operation approaching highway speeds-
The definition of a BAKER DD6 means 6th gear is Direct Drive with NO Overdrive or Underdrive in top gear which translates into 99% efficiency for minimal parasitic loss, minimum wear & tear & maximum fuel efficiency.
Quiet & smooth is what the DD6 basically translates to for a transmission.

Thanks for the info Vince good ta know, I called it a DD6 because it is stamped into the side of the Transmission, and all the parts I ordered out of Bakers catalouge for the model also says it is a DD6 but yeah good to know tho thank you

I had a certified HD Mechanic purchase a new Baker dd6 and install it 2 years ago , I was having issue’s with shifting in and out of early gears but didn’t figure out which gear it was because it didn’t happen all the time and I thought I was shifting improperly and just blamed it on me -the clutch wasn’t adjusted right or shifting mechanism. Had clutch basket replaced 2 clutch cables , changed the fluid every 500 miles, but today I know what’s wrong with it. There is an engineering issue with 3 gear , I have to shift into it at about 20 miles and hour and at 2000 rpm or below and then to down shift back into 3rd I have to slow down to 25 miles an hour and below 2500 rpm or it won’t shift or rattle and you have to slow down and retry going into 3rd again. 3rd gear is way to sensitive and must be baby sat all the time. My mechanic is getting ready to contact Baker to see what remedy that can do for me . The Baker dd6 has 7626 miles on it and I can’t afford to get another transmission.
Can someone give me some good solid advise , where can folks like me get together and make a demand to Bake to address this common issue with this specific transmission, please advise.
