Baker Clutch (OEM) Problems for 08 Pitbull

Energy One
Was having some clutch problems.... Read quite a bit on the forum, and it sounded as though I need to adjust my clutch. After reading the very informative How-To sections, I gave it a shot, however I couldn't get the thing adjusted. The tranny would either be easy to shift and slip through gears or clunk into first really hard and walk or creep in first gear. So, spoke to Kent and Energy One (the maker of our 9 plate Baker clutch) who told me to tear it down and measure the plates to ensure I hadn't worn the clutch out. Ideally they should measure .098 +/- .003 according to Kent who was very helpful. So, tore it down after reading a lot on the forum about the Bandit replacement How-To and found something pretty interesting... The deepest friction plate's outer tabs were chewed down, and the resulting metal shavings were mostly on the outside and inside of the cover plate. The plates measured .0965 on the dial caliper, so the clutch plates are not worn to an unacceptable level. Any thoughts on why just the deepest plate would do this? Will contact Baker and Kent and Energy One to see what they say. Clutch claims to be warrantied to 5 years or 50,000 miles. Will keep everyone posted. Thanks for the great How-Tos that enabled me to tear into the primary.

They are definetly chewed! Any chance the clutch hub nut was loose?
Can see anything in the back of the carrier that might not be right?

Keep us posted!

Another victim of poor quality clutch components

Went and looked at the carrier briefly as it's getting late. Has a lot of play in it, so it very well might be busted as is well documented on the forum under the bandit debate and similar. I don't have time to pull the carrier tonight, but I'm pretty sure it's busted with the 1/2 inch of play it has in it. I'm just out of warranty although I only have 7.5k miles on the bike. Strange because everyone says it was fixed after the 05 bikes and I'm on an 08. I'm sure I could press BD or Baker. Baker says they have a 5 yr warranty, but not sure I would want to put a carrier back in that is just gonna bust again. Sounds like I'm out $800+ for a Bandit clutch. Wonder if Baker would just give me the cash for their busted clutch....lol fat chance on that I'm sure. :job: Have always had a hard time understanding why people don't stand by their products. Almost every issue I've had, the first response has been about how I must have done something wrong.... Had to have the tank repainted b/c the paint saver was installed lop sided and the cap scratched my paint. Had to have the rear fender repainted cause the passenger seat fell apart and the bolts sat under it and tore the paint to hell. Chrome has fallen off the grips and BD won't touch it because accessories are covered for just 90 days (but they will promptly tell you they switched chromers, so buy some new properly chromed ones for $200 and it won't happen again). Tach had to be replaced cause it went haywire. Authorized dealer broke Turk's head bolt off cause BD's manual read foot pounds instead of inch pounds. BD just helicoiled it, and now it leaks. Don't build it if you won't stand behind it (stand behind means fix it, not band-aid it). BD didn't have to beg, plead, push, bargain, or threaten to get my money; Why do I have to do that to get them to fix crap? And people wonder why Americans buy foreign stuff. I don't. Been a love / hate relationship with this bike. Wish people would do what's right; Wish I lived in Wichita.

You do (should) have the redesigned carrier; check to see if the carrier hub nut is loose as V mentioned above. That's been an issue for several of us. It is reverse thread but it still happens. Several threads on it.

Update.....Found the culprit

After getting the clutch out of the primary, I discovered that the bolts holding the clutch carrier together had backed out. This resulted in the damage you see in the back of the primary housing. In addition it caused the inner most clutch plate to get chewed as in previous pictures. Will contact the local dealer and see what to do.

Clean the unit and just lock tight the bolts. Clean out the primary with solvent (brake kleen) and reassemble. Test ride...should be fine.

08 Pitbull clutch problems with no end in sight?

OK I have a question to see if I can chase this issue down, I have adjusted my clutch to where it works with no issues, then after about 10 miles it needs adjusting again (hard to find neutral and poor down shifting) adjust one more time and then about 10 miles repeat. Well checked the cable and adjusted rod(using the finger tight method) everything looks OK. then test rode about 200 yards and started getting a grinding noise( from the clutch pack side and can feel it in the clutch cable handle when i apply pressure on it.Bike has 3500 miles and as of this evening i have no adjustment in the rod at all ) and i think that the bolts holding the clutch carrier together have backed out. I haven't taken it apart and I'm not going to it's under warranty and they can deal with it.Just wanting to see if this sounds right on the diagnoses.I have adjusted he thing 3-4 times this mth almost after every ride thats. Does this sound about right. After they tear it down I'll post the results and see if i can get some pics to post..

Thank you for the kind words about Energy One. Sorry you are having these problems with other vendors and they probably have strict guidelines. I do not come on here much and read, but again the products that we sell and the integrity we take on our customer service, we would like to stand behind our parts that also need to be replaced. Feel free to give me a call or email me your address and let me know if you have a 9 or 12 plate kit, and we will get it shipped out to you. It is a small price to pay to stand behind our product.

Sounds like you could be having a similar issue. They are going to give you flack for trying to adjust it yourself. They might go as far as to say, since you adjusted it, they aren't going to cover it even though the damage they find is clearly not, in any way, from you adjusting things. I have not had good experiences with customer service from Big Dog. Am interested in your outcome. Good luck.

Kent,

Appreciate your help and integrity. I ordered a Bandit today. Looking to fix it for good and not have to worry. Went up to the local dealership today. I think they were somewhat shocked at what they saw. I'll keep you posted. Thanks.

non loctited bolts

Sorry to hear the news. If i didnt tear my 07 mastiff down for paint I would have the same problem or worse. Come to find those bolts on the carrier had no loctite on them, and backed out. Tore my inner primary up a bit but salvageable. Can you say loctite, loctite, loctite!

Got everything back together tonight. Made a donation to the site b/c I used it quite a bit for the bandit install as well as the primary schematic. Can't thank the guys who have posted all the How-Tos enough. Letting it sit to let the loctite harden and to see if anything leaks. Did start it and shift it into first. Man, does it feel smooth. If you are wondering what to do with your f-ed up clutch, please get the bandit. Can't wait to ride. Donated to the site tonight b/c I appreciate the help. Saw tonight that the horn is dangling and looks like the mounting bracket is broke... that will be the next project.
