Bad Ignition Wire!

My Chopper has been dying on me at least 1-3x every ride(based on length of ride)since I bought the bike in August 2011.It always died while riding and never didn't start right away,until recently.6 weeks ago it failed to start after I exited my Dr's office to go home,or a bar,whichever came first.I had no clue the problem until I was moving the plug wires while watching the EHC lights.Every time I jiggled the plug wires the lights would flicker.Off came the coil cover and BAM! I found the problem that had plagued me for over a year.It was the jumper wire that was installed as a recall notice for the key ignition.A short,2 orange wire POS!All the people telling me it was the EHC and to replace it...people,don't be so hasty to throw out the EHC,Just sayin'!

Your right about the EHC. Too many blame problems on it and replace it with a over priced POS wire plus. With the thousands of Big dogs I have worked on over the years, I have only actually replaced 2 or 3 at most. A LOT more Ignitions for sure.

So you're saying it was the ignition key wiring and not a "Bad Ignition Wire"?

Yeah,there was a "jumper" that was installed because of some recall notice.It plugged into the ignition key wiring just behind the coil.If I hadn't been jostling the plug wires and ignition key wires behind the coil,AND noticed the EHC lights flickering,I don't know if I would have caught it for awhile. Bike is running like a banshee right now.It just sucks that I can't get anything more than 91 octane around Tucson,so having to splurge for octane booster to keep away most of the top end noise.Keep safe guys!

I use TORCO in my bike. Use 1-2 oz per gal. I get it off amazon.com for around $22 a qt. It works better than any other booster I have found.

My bike is doing the same thing. Sometimes it coughs and backfires like it shuts down and restarts itself while riding. Once it didn't restart. I pushed it up a hill, which took a couple of minutes and then it started again. I was also leaning to thinking it was the ignition switch. I won't be able to troubleshoot anymore this year as our riding season has been done for about a month now. Dam snow.
