So I'm on my second grade 5 fender stay bolt breaking. They are a pita to drill out. I'm thinking about switching to grade 8 bolts, but I'm worried if they break it will be impossible to get out? What are your experiences with grade 8 fender stay bolts? Anyone know where you can get chrome ones? Silver at least?

Kdub i think that was a service bulletin (like a recall) issued a long time ago before BDM folded. Yes, upgrade the bolts. Some one not as drunk as I may direct you to the actual bulletin.

Haha great thanks. I remember hearing something about that but wasn't sure if they just fixed it by going to a grade 8 bolt.

Any chrome cap head bolt (allen head) will be grade 8 by default. Chrome hex heads are typically grade 5 but you can get them online in grade 8. Sears Hardware carries them, as well as any ACE.

Got my Grade 8 chrome hex bolts at ACE Hardware. Simple to replace and should be part of a, for example, bi-annual inspection/maintenance program.

I had my fender strut bolts upgraded to grade 8 under the recall a few years back. The four that go into the frame (two each side). I had my rear fender painted and snapped one bolt in the frame. I wasn't paying close attention to the "click" on the torque wrench. Long story short I used a hardened drill bit and an ez out to get the snapped part out. Not too hard to do. Back to the question on the hardness of chrome grade 8 bolts. Don't know how true this is but a local hardware store told me that a chromed grade 8 bolt are weaker from heat treating it during chroming than a black oxide finished grade 8 bolt. The question is that is tensile strength on bolts done before they are finished or before? If before I could understand that heating it could weaken it. I used black oxide grade 8 bolts on my fender struts and put hot toppers on em. Cant see the black.
