Air Filter Oiling???

Basic question but I have to ask. Should the stock replacement filters for the stock air breathers be oiled before installing? What's the advantage / disadvantage?

Thanks,

Trashman

No.

I believe it is stated in an S&S instruction manual or perhaps on the K&N website (which I don't currently have access to). The only (air) filters which should be oiled are the K&N or 'Green' type (lifetime) filters.

How's everything running for ya?

I thought that too LDO but when i bought my High Flow Kit from S&S it came with an oiled paper filter. I have no idead how that works. I will be replacing it with a green filter because i can't find the part # for the K&N equivelant for the High Flow. I don't even know if they make one.

Dang, you live & learn I guess.

Trashman - my apologies for passing bum scoop. Could of sworn I read something about NOT oiling stock fram or purolator type air filters.

Hooli - what did you oil it with or clean it with? Was it a re-usable type paper filter?

That's the big wider filter right? How do you like it?

LDO, i didn't oil it myself it came from the factory that way. I would like to get a K&N for it but was told they didn't make one.

CC, you have got to be shittin' me. The K&N 3210 is the replacement for the High Flow! This is no shit, I had at least 4 parts guys tell me that K&N didn't make one! That is why i was going to go with a Green Performance filter. 3210 is the part number, correct!?!

3210 is the correct one(CC told me that too) :2thumbs:, the measurements are 5 7/8 OD and 4 1/2 ID. I have one new in box opened plastic to check fitments was all, If any one wants it PM me, I'd like to get $30 shipped. I ended up going with a little larger one. It is the KNEE3340 that one is 6 1/4 OD and 5 1/4 ID, only thing I did notice with this one is I made some standoffs and I shaved them down a little to sorta squish the filter tighter.

LDO- I found the green filters in J&P cycles catalog. High Flow filter for S&S E or G part #401-831 $39.99. Stand off bolts for this filter part #402-045 $27.99 and Standard filter for S&S E or G part #401-830 $39.99. These prices are cheaper than the website (if i remember correctly).

Ok, OK,...This thread stared out with a simple question and I still do not have an answer! To OIL or Not To Oil, that is the question...

No. I would not oil the stock air filter. Spend the money and get a K&N or a Green Performance filter. They will last the life of your bike and you will see a definate improvement in performance. Thet are actually made from a fabric blend not paper like the stock ones. The reason you oil them is so they trap more dirt, it makes them sort of tacky and it also makes them semi- water resistant.

NO oil added to paper filters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! damage could result to it! Like hooly said, spend the $ and get a good one, they have lifetime warrenties. (KN)

If you go the K&N route, K&N makes a cleaning and oiling kit for there filters. It's a worthy investment. You get the correct oil and cleaner to maintain the filter and it lasts a long time.

And ... NO... do not oil a standard paper air filter element. NOT a good idea.
