2006 K9 quits but will restart after 5 min

I bought my 2006 K9 three weeks ago. After purchase I noticed bolts removed on oil tank panels. Owner mentioned that he had to replace starter. Dog ran fine but when I got about 30 mi out it acted like it was running out of fuel because it lost power then quit about 5 sec later. It would only restart after it set for a bout 5 min then it would only run for about 1 min then would repeat the same. I can see why the previous owner replaced the starter. The tach,spedo and lights still worked as the bike coasted to a stop. The 5 minute wait before restart seems like a heat soak on a component or is this the automatic reset time on the EHC? If it was my Harley I would suspect the coil. Do the BD's have two coils and fire seperately? I have read that the EHC will reset after disconnecting battery or does it just auto reset as the battery is being disconnected? Doe the service manuals CD type include wiring diagrams? Who sells them? I am not an unhappy customer just a wrenh with a lot of questions. I accept the challange but I like to know what and why I am doing something as to not repeat the process. Help!!!

Great attitude:2thumbs: What DRBarnhart said would be my first pic. Also, are you running a fuel filter? Pictures to help if you are, your setup may be wrong?

My 07 has never had this problem but my gas cap vent was removed by dealer at setup so maybe?

Check for proper gas cap venting

next check petcock screen for blockages

if nothing, everything is good, then we'll move on

Next time it dies check for spark. Quick and easy, and will tell you for sure if it's gas or electrical.

Some basic things I'm sure you've checked first:
1. out of gas??
(hey, it happened to me at 77 miles when I didn't top off the tank and reset odometer back to zero anyway!:bang:)
2. vapor lock/poor gas cap venting??
3. bad gas??
4. clogged petcock??

It look like the guys that saved me early am were right on track. I removed the valve an put 50 Mi on BD and no problems. I found a 2005 wiring diagram and concured that if I had a tach reading the EHC had to be supplying power to the Ign Module so no EHC problem. I really appreciate you folks that have been looking at this and responded. I think it is a matter of Knowing the beast. I can only wonder how many electrical problems have been falsly associated with this. I will post again if this changes in nature.

i had and oil change done on 07 bulldog. when the oil filter was removed the sensor in front of it was not. as a result the sensor was bent and started to malfunction telling the ehc there was a problem, hence shutting down the bike until the ehc reset. its a long shot that it would be your problem but you never know.

Kyle after changing my oil today my bike went about a half block before dieing the horn honked first then the emer, flashers started flashing then it died. Turned key off and then restarted and went about 3 miles before it done the same thing. Turned key off and then restarted and went 20 miles no more shut offs. I don't think that I hit or damaged the sencor I have a k&p filter on it and did not get close to it. I guess if it keeps it up I will find out sooner or later.

Sounds like the battery alarm T Byrd. Check the voltage.

I guess if it keeps it up I will find out sooner or later.[/QUOT we didnt get a honking horn, but did get the flashers. it would start back up after a few minutes then die, then start back up. it was annoying, but did make it back home. the dog went to the shop several times with no luck at the real problem. the orig diagnosis called for a computer update that keeps the bike from shutting down when a short is detected. the bike actually was finally fixed during daytona bike week by the guys from big dog. unfortunately we didnt make it to daytona, but atleast the bulldog was able to enjoy the festivities. so far so good she's had several outings with no problem. i do need to thank mike from tratta's in lauderdale and the team from big dog for getting everything handled.
