2005 BD Chopper Speedo Problem

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Greetings All,
I posted this tech assist thread on the wrong forum (help wanted) and decided to initiate an updated new post.

I have a 2005 BD Chopper with about 4100 miles on her. I have had the Speedo replaced by the dealer a few years ago under warranty. I have not had any problems until recently. My Speedo needle buries itself past 120 markers when I get on it and doesn’t respond to changes in engine RPM. It actually seems like it continues to rotate around the dial. The bike seems to run great even with the needle buried and the Speedo acting funky. I can reset it by turning the key off and hitting the on button. The Speedo will then work properly through normal acceleration (below 3K). It just acts up when I pull her hard. You also need to know that when I reference pulling hard, I really mean just mid-throttle quick shift acceleration (not exceeding 3500-4000). I am not even running close to WOT in any gear.

UPDATE: I charged the battery up completely and checked connections (wiggle test). I was going to remove and clean the Speedo sensor but could not figure out how to disconnect the wire plug that is attached.

I just took her for a ride and the problem remains. If I accelerate normally (under 3K) it works fine. If I rev past 3K with speed over 70 the Speedo stops working this time the needle just fell to the bottom (6 o’clock). If I turn the key off and start the bike it resets.

Appreciate any ideas or insight to remedy this annoying issue.

Update

I figured out how to remove the sensor plug. Duh, it just slides off. it had been twisted around the sensor and the wires looked like they were either stretched tight or twisted. I pulled the sensor and it was clean. Replaced the sensor wire plug this time dressing it so there is no tension and test rode.

Speedo is working properly. Hopefully this was the fix and not an intermittent issue.
