2003 Mastiff Charging Issue

My buddy took his '03 Mastiff in for new rubber, and while it was in the shop, the battery went dead, and the tech detected a charging problem.
First thing they tried was a new voltage regulator, but it didn't fix the problem. I was in yesterday dropping off my wheels for a tire swap, talked to the srvc mgr for a while, and he is stumped. Plus, being a Big Dog, he is frustrated with finding the correct parts.

Any ideas?

First thing they "tried"
You don't try parts
You test the part and if it's bad you replace it.
The charging system on these bikes is incredibly simple. If they can't fix it your friend really should find a new shop.

Excellent point. You're right, it sounds like instead of testing each component in the system, they are simply throwing parts at it.

Amazing ain't it? It worked before they put tires on it and now it dosent. If I were him I would get a truck, trailer, helicopter or any other means of transportation and get my bike out of that shop.

Update - The tech tore it down and found the bolts holding the stator to the case had vibrated loose and backed out. One had completely broken off and was bouncing around tearing chit up. Maybe an assembly tech missed the "apply Loctite" note.
