2001 Mastiff won't start? Just turn over.

Tried to start my bike yesterday and all it would do is just turn over. It is getting fresh fuel into the carb, replaced plugs and checked all connections. The bike has no problem turning over but just will not start. I tried to check for spark and it appears there is none. Could it be the Coil? The Thunderheart module has no faults and everything work on the bike (blinkers/horn etc). Any help would be great with this situation and would like to fix it before getting ripped off at a shop. It never has happened before.
Thanks again

have you tested spark with new plugs? if you have kept trying to start the engine and you are getting fuel, you may have fouled them badly enough to not get a spark - easy stuff first - also check the 3 connections on the coil

No expert here on the early bdm! thunder heart? is there an led lite on the module? if so does it blink when you crank it?

No start

The module does have a red led that lights up for a short second then goes out. The other lights I was talking about was the EHC. That is working fine also.

Does the 01 model have a crank position sensor? If it does and goes south, it will not let the coil fire. It will turn over until you kill the battery or start throwing sh?t.

Possible sensor?

Thanks for some input..... I am not familar with the location of the sensor? Do you have any pic's of the location of the sensor on the engine.

Yes there is an LED on the module right next to the com port.

If it is flashing when the engine is cranked, then it is being triggered by the cam sensor plate and the problem is likely between the module and the coil.

If it isn't flashing when the engine is cranked, the problem is between the sensor and the module.

I've seen a few bad sensor plates over the years and a lot of bad connections.

04 and earlier bikes ran the cam sensor and were dual fire ingnition systems. 05 and up bikes run the crank sensor and are single fire systems.

Should be a black plug just to the right of the oil filter I'll get a couple of pics of mine this afternoon

You shouldn't have LED's lite up on the EHC. If you do, beside the LED it will tell you what curcuit is faulty.

cam sensor lives under the ignition cover on the end of the cam cover (nose cone). Crank position sensors didn't start getting used by BDM till 05

True... didn't realize till you said that... that he's kickin a 2001.

The newer models non-ignition containing cam cover looks like this

With nothing under it

Under the nose cone cover, and then under the ignition or on the back side. It gets its pick ups off a cam "pick up cup". However, if you pull the ignition you would have to reset the static timing.

**my cover and ignition will probably be different than yours but same idea**

The pick up cup would screw onto the end of the cam

Pick up cup to the right of the ignition in this pic

End of the cam under the ignition (without the cup)

Well went to my local BD Dealership to pick up a new Cam Sensor and go figure.....the shop closed down. The closest dealer is in L.A. Can anyone get me a price for a Cam Sensor online? Where is the best place to get OEM parts for Bigdogs? I am going to replace the coil, wires and the sensor just to be safe, and hopefully last resort will be the module. For the price of bringing up to L.A. I can put all new parts in. Thanks again all for your help so far. By the way I live in San Diego and the only local bike shop that is willing to work on my bike is Cycle Visions.

Any V-Twin shop can order you one as they are generic for the Evo motors.
But you have a few options now that the dealer is shut down. You can go to the authorized service center @ Josh's Boars Nest Inc. 3207 Roymar Rd. Suite A-C Oceanside, CA 92054 760-757-4294

Or you can go to the one up in Temecula and there is one in Long Beach, the Boss Hoss dealer sells Big Dogs.

I would personally go visit Morelands and have them hook you up. The are up in Solano Beach.

Good luck,

Raywood, I will definitly stop by Moreland because it is right up the road. I decided to put a new Crane HI-4 ignition in but trying to decide to stay dual fire or go single fire? I can get a great deal and it would be better in the long run for tuning to shit-can the thunderheart. So go single or stay dual?

I would do single. BD started doing it in 05 also.
