Hello everyone, I am a new member. Found this forum a few days ago and am really enjoying it. I have a starter problem I hope someone can help me with. A few months back I picked up a 98 Bulldog with the S&S 107" motor. I new the starter didnt have much life left when I bought the bike. The previous owner said that when it goes out he recommended replacement with a high torque starter. Here is my problem. I cannot figure out what starter is in the bike now so I don't know what size starter would be considered an upgrade. S&S couldn't help because the motor was shipped to BigDog with no starter. There is no phone number on the BigDog website to call them, just an email form to request help. I have emailed them twice now and get no response. Does anyone know what size starter the factory used on this bike in 98? Can anyone recommend a high torque starter, size and brand? Just so you know there are no service shops in the area to call on. I am very capable of doing the work if I know what proper parts to order. Thank you for any help.

They used Spyke starters back in the day. The one you have should be a 1.2kw. So anything over that is good. I would go for a 2.0kw. If you look in a parts book, you will see that there are short motor starters and longer motors. I think you have a short starter. Both will bolt on the bike, but the longer one may may be long enough to rub oil lines.

Look up "shovelheadkicker" on Ebay. I think he also goes by "bigdogpartskingpin". He's very knowledgable and should be able to hook you up for a good price. Like Coolbreeze said, I'd go with a 2.0kw if available. A lot of these dogs also use a 1.6kw. Do you have compression releases on your dog? If not, that's something I would consider if it's even an option for that year model. It will save your starter in the long run.
