Do the compression release work? I know my 06 Mastiff when its cold will crank slow. I figure the oil is thicker when cold which makes it harder to turn the engine over.

Turns over good, and has a deka battery in it. It kills the battery trying to start it in cold weather. Fires right up when warm. It is frustrating.
Try this. Take a hair dryer and warm up the ehc before you try to start it. Be gentle and dont warm the unit not toast it.
try to start. If it starts I'd recommend a new EHC
One of the most common failures for EHC's is not liking the cold.
My first 2 k-9's had EHC's fail this way. Hell I started one when it failed one night by pouriong a gallon off hot water over the EHC to warm it up! Started and I drove home -- changed the EHC a couple days later and that bike was fine till some dumb bitch parked on it.

My vintage sport is odd in cold weather. If it’s cold like 50’s I put the charger on for a couple hours before I try to crank it. For some reason it seems to work.

compression releases work, Turns over good until it kills the battery. Choke works and has one level
Turn the key on and look at the ignition module when you select the run button. You should see a red light come on indicating it is getting power from the EHC. If you don't get the light do as Jersey Big Mike suggested and check it again. No light means no ignition. If you get the light my next suggestion is to give one squirt of throttle , hit start and wait until the bike is cranking then raise the enricher (not choke) 1/4 to 1/2 way.
New plugs never hurt .
