10,000 Mi Service Priorities.

Like most of us out there the economy has put a squeeze on spending. I need to do a 10, 000 mile service on the 2004 Chopper. Local shop says I'm looking at about $1,000 for the service plus I'm in need of a new front tire. Warm weather is here and i'm ready to ride. I can do the basics in the garage but not sure I want to tackle some of the other required items in a 10K service. From those of you with the higher miles on your bikes and those of you who have experienced problems related back to lack of service being performed, how would you prioritize 10K service related items?....Thanks

I'm not sure about the priority but I would check them all out. Do the items you're comfortable with and let the stealer do the rest to keep your cost down.

A Grand is crazy money. If you're doing tires anyway be sure to change out the bearings since the wheels are off anyway.

Things you can do yourself with info on the site;
- change spark plugs
- adjust clutch cable
- change brake pads (way simple)
- Oil and tranny fluid change

Things you should get done by whomever
- change fork fluid
- check and or replace head bearings

If the bike is running OK and not making noise, most everything else can hold off for $$ or a better shop.

My 0.02 -- others will have other opinions.

- change fork fluid
chacha, would it not also be important to change out the fork tube bushings? shane changed his out at about 9k and the teflon was just about gone. might be a ittle more important on the chopper/K9 due to the more extended front end. :2thumbs:

I did everything on the 10k myself except for the neck bearings and now I would probably do that too.
I did have two new tires put on and my wheels bearings checked out but they were good.

Changing the fork oil is simple.

I was also quoted about 1k from 2 different dealers in Phoenix
If you start adding it up at 90/hr you will get there quick if you change wheel bearings or tires.

Wood,
I would change the bushings out for sure, easy job and they're not expensive. It was recommended somewhere on here due to the longer tubes on the chopper bikes.

You can do it all yourself (neck bearings/races included)!!

You have us here to help!!!!:D:2thumbs::D

I am now ready for my 10k service and i just called my local BDM and they gave me a price of $362.00 and he told me the BDM had changed there service intervals, a lot of it is to (inspect) and it takes about 4 -5 hours but 5 -6 if fork seals need changed, any one have that new intervals?

If you get a service manual it has a section that lists all service that should be preformed at 10,000 miles.

Fury Motorcycle in St. Paul, MN , one of the sites new sponsors just quoted me $950 for the 10k service. $200 in parts, and the rest labor (12 hours of labor I guess). I'm trying to figure out why its nearly double from most of these other places.

$1000 for a 10k service :loony:
They must be using that new "gold flake" trans/oil/primary fluid

At 10k I had to replace worn neck bearings and worn fork bushings. Since the wrench had it apart I had them change the fork seals. Wheel bearings were good. I suspect since they where changed when new rims where put on at 2k miles. Just for front end was 200 in parts and 4hrs labor at 75 an hour. 600 for 10k service is cheap!!!

gordon, You keep asking about new intervals but from all of our members vast experience, the front end needs to be rebuilt, neck bearings at least repacked with grease or replaced, change all fluids, replace wheel bearings, check swing arm bearings, check brake pads and rotors including rotor buttons, check pushrod adjustment, and maybe some other small things. you can do all of this. now the question is do you want to stay ahead of any problems or do what BDM thinks.

well im trying to see what the difference between the two are and if i should try to do it myself. This will be the first time i try a self service--- as it was always done by the dealer in the past and if all that was done --- then i should not have to do it again so soon.
