My 06 K9 has recently started to shut off. It just shuts down while riding or sitting. I have read threads and it seems like it could be anything from the crank senor, gas cap, or ECH. One thing that happened today, I went on a very short ride, literally half a mile down the road and it shut off. I was able to restart it immediately and went about 40 yards and it shut off again. It would not crank after that, tried some but would not. I then rolled it to the house, took me about 10 minutes then it cranked right up and drove it in the yard and parked. This time the carburetor float must have stuck because all the gas was leaking from the over flow tube once I stopped. Anyone have a list of where to start, sort of a check list hopefully with the cheapest things first?

My 07 bulldog which is fuel injected is doing the exact same thing. I think something is overheating it's at the shop now I tried everything couldn't figure it out myself I bought a new crank sensor because before it would shut down I put some cold spray on it installed it back in and it cranks right up so I thought that was the problem whereas before I would have to wait like 10 minutes for it to cool down and then it'll crank up and ride perfect for another mile or two and shut down. As soon as I figure it out I will let you know because I know it is frustrating.

When you have it at home and you start it take a look at your pipes underneath your heat shields and let me know if they turn a little red cuz my pipes were getting red and that seems to be an overheating issue and I know it's air cooled and I know it's not supposed to sit there I just was too scared to drive it too far from home and be stuck somewhere for 15 minutes before it starts up again. There's a couple good guys on here Jersey Mike will help you out but I know he's waiting on my response also when my bike finally is fixed.

When it shuts off, does the bike go dead electronically? Or does the motor just die? First thing I'd check is to make sure you're getting fuel, but it sounds like your carb float may be sticking. If it sticks up (off), it runs out of gas, if it sticks down (on), you get overflow.
Second thing I'd check is the key switch. They go bad and a quick bump is the same as shutting the key off. Next to check would be battery. Make sure you have a KNOWN good battery with a full charge. These bikes don't like batteries with a low charge.

If I were to walk up to the bike and start someplace with gas on the ground:
1. Pull the oil cap and smell the oil. Smell like gas?
a. stuck float.
b. petcock leaking when off.
2. Turn petcock on and wait.
a. is the overflow tube showing signs of gas running out?
b. If I shake the bike and gas runs out the overflow tube, it's float needle.
3. Carb bowl is removed:
a. I turn the petcock on, raise the float to stop the flow. Did it stop?
b. flows with float still raised, it has debris between needle and seat.
c. petcock was turned off and still leaks at the needle and seat, it's a bad petcock.
