Mandatory flu shot at work

I have not taken a flu shot since I went to boot camp in September 1984 and that one made me so sick that I swore I would never take another one and I have made it 34 years. My current employer decided to make it mandatory and has already fired a couple of employees for refusing to take it so yesterday during my yearly physical I took the flu shot. Another officer with our department took a shot and within four hours we were both very sick. To say that I am pissed about this would be an understatement but I really don’t know what recourse we have at this point .

I agree, there are limits. Those that were fired should consult an attorney.

Look at your employment hand guide. Was it in their when you signed it. If not, you have a wrongful law suit.

Thats a hot topic on the web. Apparently, it is legal but there can be exceptions and depends on your state. If you have neen known to have reactions. You are able to be exempt. Go to OSHAs website and do a search.

I didn't get sick and I get a flu shot from my pharmacist.

Four hours and a reaction sounds like you shouldn't be getting the flu shot due to adverse reaction. You should be seeking medical attention to determine why you're having a reaction.

I'm thinking some people shouldn't be getting the flu shot and you're one of them.

They should not be making you get it. That doesn't make any sense.

I've heard this too. I just don't think this applies to everybody. I thought it kicked your immune system into working against whatever formula they guess is needed this season and it's only a guess. I was thinking you could still get the flu but it wouldn't be so bad.

I've talked to a lot of people about the flu shot and I'm not sure anyone really knows the bottom line. Some people I know never get the flu shot and never get the flu, some people just get the flu and stay home from work, most companies work out a deal so you can get a free flu shot, I've gone back and forth with getting the flu shot, and then there is the dead virus discussion. On and on it goes. I even had a pharmacist tell me years ago to get one at the beginning of the season and another 3 months later. I kind of wish I knew the whole story.

Yea if you get the flu its supposed to lesson the severity of it. At my employment if we don't take it we have to sign a form saying we refused it. I think that's just to prove that they offered it.

I work at a Hospital, It's supposed to be mandatory or wear a mask. The only time I got the flu is the year I didn't get it.

There are many strains of the flu. Every year the CDC decides which strains to guard against with vaccines. Last year 80,000 people died from the flu. My doctor said this year is expected to be bad.

Many employees are "at will" employees and can be fired for almost any reason. An at will employee can be fired for not having proof of inoculation. Schools also require them. You don't have to sign anything. As a general rule of life, three things are given: pick your battles; lawyers are expensive and #3 lawyers are stupid and useless in almost all situations. If my boss told me I was going to lose my job if I did not get a shot, knowing that their ain't no picture of me on the company wall identifying me as "employee of the year", and knowing I fuck up at least half the shit I do, plus I "take" a lot of shit home from the office......I'd be on that shot (remembering how amazed my family was when someone actually hired me).

No unions here and the only exemptions they are giving is for religious reasons.

Prior to this year I had not had a flu shot since the one I got in boot camp in 1984 and I have never had the flu. The shot they give you only protects you from one strain of the flu!
