Does anyone know what the difference is between the 04 and older and the 05 and newer backer plates?
I'm looking at this,
http://www.ebay.com/itm/8mm-KARATA-...ash=item28164833c2:g:DTYAAOSwD2pXFUrT&vxp=mtr
and I don't see any difference between it and the Ultima backer plate I'm rimming.
Is it the back of the plate where the starter bolts or what?
Yes the starter placement is different and the transmission bolt pattern is different. The offset is 0 whereas yours is like 1-7/16".

Quite a bit of differences that you wouldn't notice until you go to put it on

I'll have to do some more research on this the next time I have a primary off. Other than the offset,(which is just a spacer) I don't see any difference.

Thank you all for the input. Looks like an open primary is not in the cards for the K9. I hope Paul will be able to get the parts that he needs for his. I'll go back to looking for a BDL for the 2003.

Curtis told one time that it's a lot safer, not necessarily cheaper, to get the one for the Baker tranny's. I've been thinking of doing a 2 1/4" open primary. I believe it's like $1800

What about running a dry chain/belt inside the stock primary? I thought I saw something like that years ago. Either a sealed chain (like a drive chain) or a belt where you just need to change the two pulleys out. That obviously doesn't solve for guys wanting an open belt but could be a fix for guys with primary oil issues.

I'm running the Ultima on mine. There is a thread on it somewhere. Had to machine the engine spacer, clutch basket, and a couple other things. And a different starter shaft. I would not buy another.
Options for OP on our bikes are very slim, I'll still keep the search goin for a Karata. Also found out that the patent on the Karata was not renewed, so borrowing the design would be fair game..

I was told Ultima was junk. Yes or No??
The biggest problem I've had is the aluminum is soft. The plate on the front outboard bearing wore out, and I had to put a metal sleeve on it. I could have knocked it out of wack when I drug it in a corner one time. No matter how much polishing I do, it won't shine. Fitting it was the biggest problem. But it's going on it's 4th year and the clutch plates still look good. I did have to go with the heavier springs on the clutch. The ones that come with it, wouldn't hold the HP.

Everyone pay attention here: if the man himself thinks it's a pain in the ass...the guy who could build a rocket in his garage...you and I don't need one!

The Baker open primary is the way to go. They are available from Curtis at wild steed works , he has them for both the 250 and 300 rear tires. The Baker open primary is built to last has a 2.4" 14mm tooth belt instead of the 8mm tooth that all other open primary's have and it has stainless steel pulleys so you don't get the clutch rattle like you do with all the other open primaries that use aluminum pulleys. The outer bearing support is the beefiest I have seen on an open primary. I love mine on my chopper and I am going to put on my bulldog. The Baker open primary is the best way to go imo.

Thank you, but as I mentioned earlier...the problem wasn't the quality or issue with function. It was I didn't want to get a second mortgage to buy one. Baker is way too proud of their drives for my wallet. I can't justify the cost for basically an appearance piece since I currently have nothing wrong with my enclosed primary.
