Clutch Cable Snap - How long have you road without the cable?

Well thought I would throw this out there.

Went on a nice scenic Ride did only 200 miles yesterday went from Dallas to Broken Bow OK, and stayed over night across from their small Indian Casino.

Next Day rode up to Mena and was on RT1 Talemenia Scenic Drive and after the Panaormic Outlook started the bike and SNAP. Cable broke right inside the pulley. I didn't have another cable to pushed the bike into the road and luckily was facing downhill and powershifted into town.

Got gas was 186 miles from Dallas fueled up and hit the highways. Thankfully it was 70miles on Route 43 then about 110 miles on 69/75. Stopped once for gas after 120 miles spotted a station near a hill. Total was about 200 miles without a cable.

Anyways thought I'd ask how far you all have ridden that was the farthest for me and it wasn't fun. Hated powershifting criged everytime. I will now replace the cable around 5/6k miles so I don't have to worry again.

in response to the original question, only about 3/4 mile. U-turn, right turn, left turn, then into the driveway. kept it in second all the way.

Handles just fine! A lot better if you have a working clutch though.

I will say 3rd and 4th took some effort. Any stop signs and intersections were California rolling stops I got lucky there wasn't any traffic

Roger broke one a long time ago, so I took a lesson from that and bought one to carry (and a spare EHC) every time I tour. Bike now around 60K and clutch cable going strong. Lube with that graphite oil twice a year.
Eric...we are in Dallas tonight..thot you'd be north. Call my cell or text if you can get a breakfast. We are at a Super 8 on 75 a few blocks north of Plano Parkway...behind the Twin Peaks.

I have thought about using the bicycle chain lube with the Teflon in it where the fluid evaporates away. Anyone ever tried something like this?

I'm sure it works better than nothing. Teflon is a great lubricant. Really the insides walls of the cable should be Teflon lined but then it'd probably a $200 cable

just keep in mind that some lubricants will discolor the outer plastic coating of the cable housing, turn it yellow.

I use the bike aid product. It has graphite in it and long thin needle,so it is easy to lube the cables! Works great so far!!!

Mine broke about 4 mo the back at a stop sign leaving my neighborhood.. I got off the bike and walked her the 1/2 mile back.. didn't even wanna try to ride with no clutch..

Mine wasn't a clutch cable but the effect was the same. I blew out the throwout bearing. Had to limp thru 7 stoplights on the 8 mile ride home. Just glad it wasn't further.

they send a packet of Teflon lube with the repaired cable. They said to keep it lubed by the handle. Mine broke by the actuator.

Yea I don't know if you could ever rectify.

Now after this experience and 200 miles powershifting Every year I take the cable off and run lube down it till it leaks out. Repack the clutch assembly with new oil and move on. And Every 3 years just install a new cable and life is good. Cheap insurance.

These cables should last longer than 5 or 6 thousand miles. I'm glad they can repair them but they should be a little bigger on the inner Cable. Mine broke right in the socket by the actuator.

Mine broke at 9k miles same place yours did.

However Rick has 70k miles on his original 08 cable...go figure
