Brand New BDM Bagger

I pulled the trigger on this 2010 BDM Bulldog bagger with 55 miles on it. Never been registered and came with the title signed by BDM back in the day. I bought it from Cycle City in NY and dealt with Theo, he is nothing but outstanding to deal with and the process was super slick.

I got the bike home and it sat for a couple of weeks due to me working. I then checked all fluids, battery, and pressures and took it for a spin. Worked great. So we decided to take it for a trip and went around the bay with it on Wednesday night. Everything worked great, after I worked on the radio for a few hours. The following week end I replaced the battery just to be on the safe side. After replacing the battery the bike started up and ran like normal until we got a mile from the house, then it started sputtering and wouldn't idle at all. Rode home and parked it and jumped on the old K-9 just to realize what bike had gotten the tender lately. So we took the Hummer to lunch. I've studied up on the EFI but can't for the life of me figure what has gone wrong. The needle on the speedometer never worked either, but the digital portion of it works just fine. Today I landed a sissy bar, a new touring seat, and extensions for my forward footboards so I am super happy about it. Just a few wrinkles to iron out and I'll be the proud owner of what, in my humble opinion, is the coolest touring bike on the planet.

Now if you have any good suggestions about the EFI or the speedo, please feel free to share.

To me the bulldog bagger is the best looking bagger. Congrats on the purchase Kim. I always wanted one, they were just to expensive for me when they came out. I still think if bigdog could have introduced it in 2006 or 07 (and a little cheaper) they may have stayed around a little longer.

I know nothing about these computer bikes but I do know on my Vette you need to attach a 9 volt battery to the cig lighter before disconnecting the battery or else it loses all programming including the map.... Did you just disconnect the battery?
Thanks for all the kind words. Just for the record, I bought this bike brand new for way less than a Harley cost, and there is only three left.

Yes, I did in fact replace the battery. But after doing so it ran fine for a mile, then started to act up.

Could simply be crap partially clogging the injectors? You try and injector cleaner, I have had positive results with the Royal Purple injector cleaner. Just a thought, cheap as well..

We discussed this in other post, but try re initializing the IAC.

Disconnect battery for ~30 seconds. Reconnect, it hit run and wait ~20 seconds before you start it. You should hear the fuel pump prime for 2-3 seconds and then the IAC pulsing for ~10 seconds. Then start and let idle. Try not to hit throttle.

If you did not wait previously when you reconnected, the EFI module may have lost position of the IAC.

If this does not do it, then I would suspect, fuel or contamination in the injectors/filters

Hey Viking check outs Matts comments in this thread..says module can get corrupt possibly during battery swaps. Sounds like it might be your issue or a damn coincidence

The S&S boxes can get a corrupted box file (software) if they get a rapid on/off power input. This usually happens when there are sparks while connecting or disconnecting the battery. It can also happen when a battery connection gets loose.

Yeah I'm eyeballing the red n black one myself.. again the bet looking bagger on the planet.. unsure of the EFI side of it though. Don't u have a red one as well?? I really want one, just trying to wrap my brain around how to spend 20 grand on a bike and it's kinda nice to have never had a bike note ya know..

Yeah, when I was wrenching on cars about 5 years back, anytime a battery was swapped or disconnected for any fix, we plugged a scanner up to it and a self tendering port box..

But you still didn't answer the question.... Did you hook up an alternative power supply before you disconnected the battery?

No. And after talking to the dealer I find out he just replaced the battery. I guess I kicked my own butt. Oh well, I'll try the reset as suggested by jwooky above. I'm certain it's a computer issue as it happened after the battery swap, with exception of the first mile where it ran just fine. I also contacted BDM but was rather disappointed with their reply. They sure have work to do with their customer service.

Thanks for that info, I'll definitely try that and report back.
