About to make a 6 hr run to see CeCe in a few weeks, check tires, oil, fuel, toss roll up tool pouch in, 2 days change of clothes, rain gear, made reservations at comfort inn ( they let bikes park by front door where it's lit) plus I keep 10' kryptonite cable and Lock to secure bike to column. As for cash, that's all I like dealing with! Credit cards are evil and have allowed people to live way outside their ability causing huge dept many people have a hard time digging themselves out of. Usually when they due they have spent $20,000 paying off $8000 worth of purchases! I always use a credit card to hold my room for a reservation, then when I arrive I pay with cash!

Also remember your receipts! Gas, mechanical repairs, hotels! On long big trips I try to visit other drilling company's I know have a cup of coffee, look at new ideas they are doing. Now write the trip off on business, including your gas! Those motorcycle repairs can be deducted on your federal income as vehicle maintance. For those head aches Aleve or Motrin keep those receipts and file them under medical. My tax file box looks like a legal box! It takes me about a day. But I keep every receipt, medical livestock feed, education, everything! Service the dog, oil, oil filter ect, vehicle maintance!! If you own a business. That new pistol you wanted just became listed as security device!

Thanks for the input.

I got a ton of stuff rattling around in my head, I need to jump on my bike and let the wind blow it out.

I've never ridden more than a hundred miles or so in one direction, just tring to get an educated idea of how to go about it.

How long you been riding. Just curious as some of my answers, well, most were just a little on the smartass side. If I owe you an apology consider this it.

I am a very practical person, VERY! I bring a bat, knife and a gun to a fight! if your dog does not have a sissy bar get one, 2nd get a luggage rack, 3rd get a T-Bag. Next get a roll up tool cloth. These can be found on E-bay for $18-$30. Put channel locks, med crescent, small cresent, pliers, wire pliers, screw driver with pull out tip that reverse from flat blade to Philips, spark plug socket, 8 sockets varying from 3/8 up to 3/4'' and a med vice grip. This will get you out of 99% of your lurches. next pack rain gear, I have been out and the temp drop and been damn happy I had my rain gear. Many people do not run their dogs far on the road, I do. With what I have just told you to do, I have gone on 300-400 mile rides and not worried for one second. Also with the T-Bag I keep a nylon cooler I pack 3-4 waters and a cool pack.

You might want to find some local riders that do the kind of riding that you want to get into and start riding with them to get a "feel" for the road trips.

On long rides I carry a backpack with tools and etc in it. Liferider named pretty much all the tools you may need. I also carry my DMM as well, I don't go too many places without it.

This weekend I'll try and post up what's in my tool roll and what I carry. I've done a lot of thinking on it.

There's gonna be some shit that might happen that you just can't do anything about.

I've gotten a flat tire from a Razor Blade so even 2 plugs wouldn't hold. Ended up towing home.

My clutch cable broke about 200 miles from home, just rode it without a clutch can you say California rolling stops? Could also be why I just had to rebuild my transmission haha. Couple guys will carry a spare cable , but man changing a clutch cable roadside will be a long job, but I now carry the tools to do it.

I've had parts fly off like mirrors you just keep on truckin...life is always good man when on the dog.

Your correct Imfamous on the mirrors! Been there done that! One other thing. If your running at night. Make sure you have your next fuel stop in a town that is open! Had this happen to me running through Nebraska. Refueled at 45 miles because the next big town was 140 miles the way we went. Had I not made that 1.3 gal. Fuel up my ass would have been pushing my dog! Lot of small towns roll up the side walks at sun down!
