Tire rubbing belt

So get I get the wheel back on, and the new tire is rubbing the belt, measured to the center of the axle both sides. Same on both sides. Is the tire to wide, it's a shinko not a venom tire 2008 BD K9

I just put the same tire on my '09 K9 today, I put the wheel back to the same setting as the tire I took off(Metzler) and it barely clears.
When I mounted the last couple Metzler tires, I had to remove quite a bit of the sidewall with my belt sander to get the tire to stop rubbing my belt. So in contrast to the Avon which had good spacing to the belt, I think that the Shinko is definitely wider than the Avon. I have not road tested it since it got dark on me, but I might have to remove a little of the sidewall with my belt sander on the Shinko too.

the Big Dog was engineered around Avon Venom/Cobra but due to Avon falling on their face when they changed over to the Cobra, people started looking for an alternative. then came the Metzeler 888. unfortunately, the Metzeler 300mm ain't 300mm, it's closer to 318mm. that means that each half is 9mm wider. now that ain't so bad on the non-drive side but it sucks on the drive side. haven't checked out the specs on the Shinko yet because right now, i don't need a new tire. moral of the story, " look before you leap". not trying to make joke of anybody, just saying to be aware of the situation.

I'm curious, where did you get that spec/dimension? 318mm that's 3/4" or 3/8" per side, I didn't notice that much difference.:oldconfused:
This was all I could find

Tire Size: 300/35-18
Tire Width: 300
Tread Depth: 6.3mm (1/4″)
Tube or Tubeless: Tubeless
Width: 299mm (11.81″)

I had the same problem when I replaced my Avon 300 with the Metzler 300 on my 2006 K9. The tire was rubbing on the drive belt. I purchased a 1/8 " plate that I mounted in between the hub and the pulley in order to move the belt out away from the tire. So there was no need to shave the side of the tire down. That was a year ago and its been working great ever since. Keep in mind when or if you do this that the belt will track out further on the drive pulley (pulley on the transmission), so you need to insure that there is enough clearance on the transmission end.

i have been unable to find the website again, but i believe i left out part of my memory on my previous post. it seems like the critical dimension for the avon was 308/309mm so in actuality, the metzeler is only 3/16 wider per side which makes the experiences about trimming the sidewall more realistic. i will keep trying to find the location of the spec sheet but, alas, it seems to be gone. i guess they don't want to be held responsible for variations. sorry for the confusion.

The tire only rubs in spots. It has a little ridge, where the tread meets the side wall. I will check the alignment again just to make sure but it think sanding that ridge down is the best option.

Bro2 and I cut a notch in the old (being replaced) Metzeler 300 and got a feeling on how much we could grind down the v-shaped sidewall area. I felt about 3/16" to near a 1/4" maximum was the limit. We did belt sand down the sidewall V and got the belt clearance we needed. We ran the bike on the lift with a jack stand and sanded down the tire while it was turning. Almost time again to replace it at the end of this year.

I appreciate the picture of the Metzler sidewall thickness, I know I took at least 1/8" to 3/16" off my tire as well as Postman's tire for adequate clearance. I was curious how much rubber there was before we would find cords.

Well just my opinion on this shinko can't speak on any other tires an could be way wrong on this. The ridge look like where the rubber was injected into the mold. Kinda like the flash you get on a plastic after it comes out of a mold. In which case just trim it off flush an good to go. It looks like sanding it down flush with the edge of the tire will give me the clearance needed. I will give it a shot an update on the results
