How do you check to see if electric compression releases are working?

After snapping off my starter shaft I would like to know how you check the compression releases to make sure they are working correctly. They click down when pressing on them but I read somewhere on here about unplugging the green wire from the starter and maybe push the run button. Does that sound right? Can't remember what I read and can't find the thread.
Curtis rebuilt my starter, it's back on and want to check this out before starting it for the first time. I might wire the compression releases, like some have done to operate when pressing the starter button but there is no time to do that now. Thanks Jim

You can put your finger on the compression release one at a time and just hit the start button for a second and you will feel them pull down if they are working properly.

Pulling spark plugs will just prevent from starting but starter will still engage. Pull the green wire like frank said, that will stop the starter from engaging.

I am glad I stumbled upon this thread. My bike has really struggled to turn over a few times recently.

Ok, lube them with what, KY? No seriously what just plain old grease?
Cut a very small slit on the condoms... just big enough for the straw of a WD-40 can to get in there, then spray them, give them a hand-job for the oil to penetrate properly and.... off you go! vil-oui.gif

So pulling the little green wire with the spade connecotr will make the start NOT spin the motor over? but still alow you to hit the start button and engauge the CR?s

Correct. CR and starter are not on the same circuit they are autonomous. Some guys have wired them into the starter just because that way the CR are engaged through the entire start cycle. I believe the stock BDM wiring only triggers for the first few seconds. If you do a search I think you'll find some post on this. MoeSpeeds did a few writeups.

This is a good time to take a compression test, check the plugs, break the bond of the plug threads so electrolysis does not creep in. The other part is spark away from the plug holes, but still ground the plug in the plug wire to the engine, or it's whoosh fuel in your hand, plug is close to the hole holding the CR... Be careful... ask me how I know about plugs/spark/whoosh?

Ive gone through 11 jackshafts due to various reasons. The breaking of yr shaft may not necessarily be related to yr C/R's. Its a great place to start as it is the easiest. In my case it was a bad inner primary case, rolled backward while hitting Start and some other crap I cant think of right now. Piece of advice, get a slam button from Curtis. Ive had one for about 2 years and have had no jackshaft or starting at all.

So are you using the slam button to start the bike every time?

Bike is back together and everything is working as it should. C/R are clicking in every time, starter spins faster then ever Curtis's rebuild works great. Going to do the slit in my rubbers to lube the C/R next.
Plus installed a new loud car horn works so much better then that wimpy Jap sounding fucker.
