High speed wobble???

This past weekend I took off on a 7 hour ride to southeastern Ky on the 07 mastiff. This was much easier 15 years ago by the way. I will post other issues that popped on this adventure. First up there are many long sweeping turns on the 3 highways I traveled on. I was very surprised when the bike started into a high speed wobble. I was rolling at 75 to 80 MPH only a touch fast for the posted speed limit of 70 MPH. Twice I had to grab the brake on a bumpy curve that caused a bad wobble. I did an inspection at the next gas stop and found nothing obvious. Has this happened to anyone or any ideas on what to check? :confused:

High Speed wobble is not good for you heath. I would jack the front end of the bike and check the to make sure it is not loose. You could have bad wheel or neck bearing. If it was balance it would wobble all the time not just when you hit a bump. Be safe Bro.

How do you know if your fall away is okay or needs adjustment (i.e., how do you tighten or loosen your neck bearings and know where to set them)?

I have had some HSW on my 07 Bulldog in the past. I rebuilt the front forks this winter and when I diassembled the inverted fork tubes I found that one of the valving control rods that screws into the upper tube cap had unscrewed and was disconnected. The jam nut had backed out so I added a split lock washer at assembly time. This caused that tube to NOT have any shock hydraulic valve control only the spring was acting. Since the rebuild I haven't noticed any problems.

This problem could be a result of the dealership mechanic that reassembled my factory fresh bike when it was disassembled for new paint and chrome and not the factory.

Your Mastif has different front forks so fallaway and/or neck/wheel bearings may be a contributor to the HSW problem.

Had a "slight" shake at 85+ while cornering ....went away after putting new tires on ! The tires were OEM ...bike rides and handles so much better ! replaced both front and rear ,new Avon's

Hahaha,so true m,those 700 mile trips did seem so much easier 15,20 years ago!!

Been there, done that. I chocked it up to design flaw. I may be way off base here, but, I believe the longer forks on these bikes need a fork brace. They're not as long as the K9 or chopper forks, but they are longer than "normal". I tried everything imaginable to eliminate exactly what you drscribed. I finally said fuck it. I'll just slow down in the curves.

I would also check the bearings in your front wheel becasue in the turn you are putting alot of side load on them. Good luck!

I checked the bearings in both wheels and checked ok. The fall away might be part of the issue, I will know in a few days.

RIDE IT HARD!!!
It could be something as small as the air pressure in the tires. CHECK THEM OFTEN !!!

Wheel weights caused my chopper to have problems a while back. Pulled them off 2 yrs ago and switched to Dynabeads. Best upgrade I have ever done!

So I just need some clarification. I am planning on checking my fall away this evening. And research says 1-2 inches....is that number total..I.e. 1 inch to the left plus 1 inch to the right equals my max 2 inches? Or 2 inches left 2 inches right?
