VIBRATION AND CHATTER PROBLEM

OK, to start with I am compairing "Skully" to my two previous BD's, this bike has allways rode like a dream, with very little vibration and no chatter under take off compaired to my other two bikes..
so here is the story, please keep in mind this is over about two months time;
1. had the rear tire changed prior to the road trip we took several weeks back. about 1200-1500 mile trip.
2. on the the way home i started to get a vibration, thought it was the rear tire out of balance.
3. had it check, could not find any problem, even thought there is some type of compound being thrown up on the trans from the front belt pully. it is thick like grease, it has what looks like alum sparkle in it. there is nothing thrown on the rear wheel or pully. had belt adjusted. belt look in good shape.
4.vibration and chatter under load is getting worse, had it checked again. still can not find any problem. again compound in on trans.
5. this past Sat we rode about 200 miles, compound again is on trans. we were cruiseing at 80-90 on the interstate, the right side bar vibrates so much it puts my hand to sleep. at 55 in 5th gear the bike chattered so badly when hitting the throttle to pass, i thought the pully was coming off. once you level off, the chatter and vibation decreases but is still really bad.

GUYS, PLEASE DON'T HIGH-JACK THIS TREAD, I REALLY NEED SOME GOOD HELP WITH THIS.

Need more details maybe a pic of the area of deposits. From what you said- do you have a belt primary? Not sure what you mean by chatter.

i am not speeking of the primary, it the drive belt front pully. if you look at the inside of the front pully there is an opening inbetween the trans and the pully. RSD. that is where the compound gathers, on the edge of the opening.

put your bike in 5 gear and slow down to 30 mph, now hit the gas hard, thats chatter.

it is totally differant than a vibration.

so does it feel as though you are really lugging the engine? - could it be a gear problem?

Anything below 2000 rpm is lugging the engine. Check for ware on the inside of the belt. look at your pulleys for abnormal polishing. Check for wheel/belt alleignment.

Skully.......when you put your bike in 5th gear at 30mph...thats lugging the engine.....not good! like Kraut said....anything below 2000 rpm is lugging...5th gear at around 53 mph is 2000rpm

SKULLY Just a guess on vibration check oil level in trany,drain a liittle oil out look for metal.Remove the clutch cover check in and out movenent of the pulley gear.Any vibration is not good thing.Does your belt stay in adjustment?Do you have a picture of the front and rear pulley.When you changed the tire was it the correct size? 05chop:flag:

you guys are not reading my post, as stated the "belt looked good".
that was the example of "chatter" being in 5th gear at 30 mph. i did not say that i did that.

running at 55 in 5th and hitting the gas SHOULD NOT give you the chatter.
i've got over 30,000 miles on BDMs and have never had this situation before.

FYI; i turn a lot of my own wrenches, including chopping and modifing bikes, i'm not certified but i know my way around.. this is something that i have never encountered. i've allso got 45 years of riding bikes.

05 chop, after the road trip, they went in and checked the clutch (i have the 08 assembly) in my 06 k-9, everything looked good.
they pulled the front drive pully cover and checked the gear and for leakage, no problems found. they used the light source for the leak test.
the drive belt was check and tightened.
i've had a belt off center before and that will usally give you a cherping sound. nothing like that.
visually everything looked good and in place.
tire, same 300 that i had before.
i remember they had a swing arm pin recall, would that call something like this?

Skully rear swing arm pin thats a good call.If this pin was broke wouldnt this change belt tension? 05chop

May not be related to the grease in the output shaft. First two things I would check are engine mounts especially the top one and the handle bar bushings. If they have been inside your primary make sure the chain is adjusted correctly. Pull the dipstick on the tranny to see if you find any debris.

Where is this chatter comming from? You changed your rear tire. Can't do that without changing the tire alleignment. The funk on your tranny could be dust from your belt. All possibilities. Could be a bearing on the outpit shaft on the tranny going out causing noise and the seal to leak. Loosen the belt and try to move the pulley side to side-check the in and out play. are the door bolts loose. Look at the engine oil pump-is it loose-a little oil mist from it could be blowing onto the tranny.

As Vegas said for the vibration I would check the coil/top motor mount. I did a thing on here a while back about replacing the two top motor 1" bolts with 1 1/4" bolts for better holding ability. They are know to come loose and you can really tell with the vibration and especially with the tank vibration.

Don't answer the grease/oil leak but worth checking out.

oh, and the leak on the tranny sounds like the starter to me!!!

Have you considered pulling the clutch pushrod to look for wear? SB-1065 calls for a pushrod replacement on 2005 models as the orginal was too wide and tapperd wrong. There is a lot of ifs, but the particles could be suspended in the grease and if your leaking that it maybe what is showing up. Me -- I'd give it a pull to take a look to elimiate it as a possibility.

Something to think about...

It sounds like a loose engine mount to me, check the top mount and coil cover and front and rear engine mounts. There are flat washers under the allen bolts that bolt the coil cover to the head and these washers can deform as well as the metal around the mount holes and give you a loose condition when the bolts don't really seem loose. there are fiberglass washers under the mounts that are supposed to insulate the coil cover from engine heat, check those as well.

as far as the gunk on your pulley cover, the clutch release is packed with a lithium complex based grease. close proximity to the exhaust can cause this grease to break down and ooze out of the seal on the pushrod. the pully will sling this grease around the inside of the pulley cover. The rear belt should track a mimium if 1/8" from the insode or outside edge of the trans pulley. if it is tracking off either side, it will generate dust from the belt which will stick to the gunk. A miss alignment can accelerate pulley wear which will generate tiny metal particles.

well they replaced the rear pully and belt and replaced the seals in the trans. over this past weekend i took it out for the first long run. to me the vibration is still there. it just does not fell as smooth as it did before the tire got replaced. i was hoping that it would be elimated with the replacement of the pully and belt, but to me it feels the same. no more grease like goop at the front drive pully, but back to square one with the vibrations. 2.14.08

You know all the shit that you have replaced! Man I'm thinking install another tire.Back to square one what a bitch keep us posted.The forum has got some more techs since your last post.

What about tire balance.... have you tried dyna beads... maybe your dealership's tire balancer is JUNK

:hi: hey skully, not meaning to sound like i'm making lite of the situation, but sometimes you end up with a smart-assed tech that thinks it would be funny to put something in the tire and see how long it takes someone to figure out what the problem is. might not be a bad idea to at least have the tire pulled and checked. good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:2thumbs:
