cloudy clutch and brake handles

Just got the mastiff (07) and it had sat on a shipping truck for the last 90 days. The bike is dusty but all and all great condition (only has 37 miles yep...37)

anyway... the handle bars, controls, speedo all look like they are cloudy... I got in advance mothers billet polish but I wasnt prepared for the oxidation on the chrome.

went to the local harley dealer and they pretty much told me im SOL. (of course after I told them it was a Big Dog....

any of you guys have a "gotta try" solution? I dont mind experimenting but the cost of that is getting up there for trial and errors...

thoughts?

thanks!

Spineguy

It is raining cats and dogs so will post pics when I can get some sun on the mastiff...

Welcome and congrats on the new bike!

If it's billet aluminum and not chrome then search here and you'll find a number of recommended products to use to get the shine back.

If it is chrome then any mild polish should work well, but be careful not to scrub too hard or you could go through the chrome layer.

Try some Barkeepers friend, it won't scratch like scouring powder does. Try some in a more hidden chrome area to test.

Try some chrome cleaner, hell, spray them with wlndex and wipe it off. The billet. Cleaner is for billet aluminum I think.

I guess I assumed the clutch, front brake and speedo were in chrome. Could they be in aluminum?

I feel like a dope for asking and not knowing. I didn't get any black residue on cloth when trying the s100 detail spray I bought.

Confused now...

Make sure whatever you use it has minimal or no abrasive properties. If it dose it will dull the chrome and you can lose the Mirror Finish. I am no longer a Blue Job dealer cause of the latest price increase however this is what I suggest for any chrome. Google "Blue Job Chrome Cleaner" and you will find it. It has no abrasive and works great. Hope this helps.

Toss up pics of what you have. Stock is generally polish-able, but you could have a chrome package.Search for answers and then ask away if you do not fins a solution:cheers:

Did the shipper cover the bike? I would ask them how it was handled and if covered what did they use?

Sounds to me as if your bike just really has had no tender loving care for quite some time....i will bet my bottom dollar all parts you mentioned above are aluminum and can be polished back to a chrome like shine with some aluminum polish and your sweat equity.....rub on.......rub off.....simple as that

You guys were right! aluminum it is... boy I'm going to need a lot of mother's polish...

no the carrier didn't cover the bike... heck I'm just glad it was delivered in a reasonable time as it came from utah..

all good, I don't mind spending the time and the little I did tonight with the billet polish, worked!

i just may need elbow transplants after this...

All and all got an amazing deal considering it is a 07 mastiff with just 37 miles... (carb rebuilt before I bought) stock pipes but will stay on for now...

besides the mothers billet polish, Im already a fan of the S100 stuff...

pics maybe tomorrow if sun can shine in Indiana

I would think the bars themselves and the speedo (if still stock) should be chrome, the controls and the speedo bracket are aluminum. As far as the aluminum, you said you had mothers. Here's a tip, apply using a latex glove, working light to med pressure, remove with sweatshirt material (as terricloth, and even micro fiber will leave scartches.

I would think the bars themselves and the speedo (if still stock) should be chrome,
speedo bucket on the '07 is aluminum, or at least it is on mine, and the replacement wide bracket is chrome. made the mistake of assuming it was aluminum also and now have a slight copper tint to it. :bang:

Billet cleaner will not hurt chrome... so if in doubt, take a little billet cleaner and rub a test spot. If the rag goes black, it's billet. If nothing happens, probablly chrome.

wow great tip on the latex gloves and sweatshirts...

sweatshirts are easy from the local good will

latex gloves are really easy as I sell spine implants to surgeons (hence spine guy)

interesting though that microfiber towels are bad cause every youtube video i watch uses... better safe than sorry!

good thing i was tipped off to the risk...was off today to get a mothers cone to put on my drill as my elbow is wearing off already after two coats of billet...

Spineguy, i use S100 and Mothers liquid wax together on everything, paint, wheels and chrome for general clean up.

for polishing the billet I use Mothers Billet and the spa towels (no scratches). It takes some time with the polishing to get the shine, but once you get it looking good, it doesn't take much effort to keep the bike looking good.

A few Jack Daniels and your done!

I just tried a product called Ultra Wenol. It works great and isn't as abrasive as Mothers or Wizards. It also works on chrome and will not scratch. It will make your billet look like chrome with some elbow grease. Just be sure you get the Ultra and not the regular.

ok guys, I'm lost! i bought mothers billet polish and went to town on my wheels. below is a shot of what I have so far. this is after three applications of mothers... is there something to take this off first, then go to mothers?

reminder, the bike is a 07 and only had 37 miles so it has sat... i was told never outside but it has sat for some time....

anything little more aggressive than mothers that will take care of what looks like to be measles...;)
