went last week to get tag for bike. 685 for tag and sales tax. guess I should have handed them a "made out" bill of sale for like 4000.00 rather than taking the paperwork for dealer showing 13000.00. Didnt get the tag....gonna have to wait. Still pondering on the bill of sale idea. Frickin government!

Someone already paid the sales tax once when the bike was new. Now why would you have to pay taxes on it again?

To be honest, I have no clue. I really don't understand. As stated, I may just wait a month or so and walk back in with a bill of sale saying i paid half the price that i actually paid. Yep, I know that ain't all cool and stuff but what the heck.

I feel your pain. Paid over $1K on sales tax, title and tag in Louisiana. My next tag will be in MS, but it will only be a transfer and not sales tax. The government is going to get you one way or another.

cause you always do, it can happen over and over on the same car or vehicle.

If you buy it from a dealer at say $30,000.00 in Pa. thats $1800.00 in taxes, Sell it for $15,000.00 and another $900.00 in taxes will be owed if transfered in Pa.
If your too far below the wholesale price on any vehicle, Pa. will not give you title until their approved taxes on the value is payed.
I would think this applies to most, if not all states at their tax base.

A 13K sale here is almost $1200 in sales tax alone, not including the:
Filing fee
RTA tax
License fee
vehicle weight fee
license computer use fee

Every resale gets charged a 9.2% tax in our county

FL is every time you want a first tag your going to pay sales tax. With the exception of just moving into the state.
If it floats or has wheels they know what it's worth.

In Va. its 3% regardless of new or used and its always there everytime the item is sold to the new owner. The County I live in access the value of your vehicle based off NADA so even if its a gift they are gonna put a value on it and tax you. Ain't that shit just great ! Plus you will pay property taxes on the item each year just to have it.

Used $20,000 bike x 3% = $600 tax plus tag fee as well.

You used to could get by with altering the bill of sale in Arkansas. But a couple years back I sold a bike and I marked it up to help me on my new purchase and the guy I sold it to marked it down so he wouldn't have to pay so much. Needless to say we both got a nasty letter from the DFA telling to resubmit the bill of sales correctly or face a fine.

Well, I am seriously considering just writing out a bill of sale...............say for 6000.00 and trying to use it. Sad thing is, they know my face now and have already seen the invoice from dealership with 13000 writtien all over it. HMMMM! Sure would like to find a way around it. My thinking is, how the heck will they know what I paid for it. Its financed but they even sent me the title.............ODD!

Everyone out here doesn't get excided
with autos cost about a grand a year
That sucks
in pa tags were cheap

Tags Office in TX got smarter i guess cause when I hacked my Bill of Sale and did the title/tags transfer, they apparently pulled up a BlueBook or NADA value for it and charged me tax based on that value they looked up which was a lot more than my Bill of Sale would have been. :bang:

don't mean to rub salt, but south carolina is maximum $300 sales tax no matter what the cost of the vehicle. $125k Benz=$300. property tax is a whole different animal.

maryland does the same as pa. the only good news is that you do not have to pay personal property tax on a motor vehicle EACH year like virginia and some others.

every two years you get hit with a fee for "new tags" (the tags are not new, only the little sticker) i think it is around 120 bucks for a bike.

maryland is otherwise a tax hell: income tax, heavy real property tax, etc. if you can dream it, maryland will tax it.

TX has been doing that for a while now. New trick is they add $25.00 a month from date of sale on top of the 6.25% tax based on blue book. Sold a buddy my old bobber last year and he just registared it and it cost him an additional $450.00

im glad i live in idaho by the sounds of things. its easy to to forge a bill of sale, you just have to go to one of the small town dmv's and they dont ask any questions. no property taxes on vehicles, and i paid something like 45 dollars for a two year registration for my chopper.

Utah has 6.5% sales tax on the transaction but, like Idaho, real easy to put together a bs bill of sale. Ive never had one questioned. This only works on private sales though. If you buy shit here through a dealer, they file it, & usually collect the sales tax, etc..

As far as the property tax goes... Utah has an age based system. The max for a brand new vehicle is $150

They won't charge you if it was not running.

You will have to swear to it though...in writing.

If there is a bright side to the market value of our used bikes collapsing it's that you pay less and less each year in property taxes. The silver lining in a very ugly black cloud.
