Nearly died tonight when my rear brake rotor sheared off the hub.

Was coming up on a red light with a car stopped in front of me. Put on the brakes and the bike started going faster. Had about a split second to decide what to do so I opted for a 3 foot gap between the stopped car and a telephone pole. Jusssssst barely made it. :eek:

Fucking rear rotor had completely sheared off the hub.

WTF, First glad you are okay and made the gap. What the hell caused the rotor to shear off?

Had you had an excess play on the buttons, how many miles on the shoes. any recent work that involved messing with the rotor?

Once again glad you are okay-How was the front brake acting?

Wow, you talkin' about the floating part coming loose or the rotor bolts on the hub shearing?

All good questions. Don't know what made it shear off, but it split off at the cast piece that the rotor connects to. The front brake alone probably would've caused me to dump the bike if I'd have gotten on it as hard as I needed to to stop short of the car. I hit it a little, but I wasn't gonna lock it up for fear of skidding and laying it down hard. Had my girlfriend on the back too.

I'll get some pics in the morning.

Good choices....seen a couple mishaps this year where the rider over reacted in a panic stop using the front brake and they went down.

Again.... glad you and your girl are ok :2thumbs:

Once again, great to hear that you are okay and that you where able to think quickly and come out unscath. Never heard of the hub giving way like that. Be interesting to see what the root cause was. Had it been worked on anytime that involved that area, maybe a seal or bearing change that required the removal of the rotor, or possibly taking the wheel apart for cleaning.

Inquiring minds want to know, but main thing is that you and the lady are okay. :2thumbs:

I wonder if during the change out they may have done something to lead to the failure, maybe took the rotor off and over tighten it back to the hub and stretched the bolts to near failure or possibly did not properly tighten it and allowed it to get loose enough to creat the failure.

Well hoping that it gets fixed real soon and that you are able to get back up and riding again. Hopefully you will never have anything close ever happen again!

I dont' know how they balance a motorcycle wheel but pulling the rotor is definitely a possibility. Over torqued or under torqued fasteners could easily have caused the issue. It's just to big of a coincidence.

The extra weight of a passenger definitely changes your stopping ability. Glad you both made it OK. Damn good driving skills to! Hope I never get caught in that kind of fix.

Here's a coupla pics that show where it sheared off. The loose part is gone in the pics, I had to cut it off with a hacksaw to get it home.

Man, I'll bet you don't see that very often (don't WANT to see that very often)!!
Wonder what the cause was? Is there any evidence of a failure within the caliper?
