This is directly from BDM.
The "problem" is inherent with the design of the tank opening on the side (not highest point of the tank) which has nothing to do with the warranty.

I was "bikeless" for 3 months already while they tried to fix this already but it made the problem worse....leaks even more than before plus the paint is flaking around the tank opening due to the fuel getting in under the paint job...

I love my bike...dont get me wrong...I just want them to fix the "problem" and get my bike to a pristine condition again....silver paint job with yellow fuel stains is not a good look....at any showing!
Who did you speak too from BDM at the factory?

No where since joing BDB is there any mention of this issue.

Can you provide this forum with all the background on this issue and bring us up to date with who has done and said what? Then perhaps we can help you resolve this issue with positive results.

What you describe is indicitive of a venting issue from the cap. It's not unique to any bike brand. When the cap does not vent the fumes can get under the paint around opening. Once is starts it's almost impossible to stop. You could have a bad cap or if you ever used a cheap aftermarket cap, the same thing could have happened.

At any raIe, as said before, t's a custom - the warranty is over. I don't think it's a good idea to use this forum with the anticipation someone from BDM will see your post and somehow work toward your benefit - that's not what we are here for.

Many here, including myself, found things on our bikes that could have been done differently - we took matters into our own hands and figured out how to redesign or rebuild parts to suit our needs. It's a custom bike.

well the tank is offset to the right as you all know so why don't they just do a trade-in on the tanks and do a center up on the gas cap? dam it's too easy i know cause i already went to cycle city in tn and asked why my fuel tank leaks  all the time? i never fill it up all the way and now the paint saver ring is bulging  up on one side for some reason. wish i had a center drilled tank...maybe my next upgrade will be just that but my bike is still under warranty and i already contacted them about this. i haven't got a answer yet so tomorrow I'll follow up and see what i can find out...

While I do not want to have any part in legal matters I will say that the 08 PITBULL tanks do leak. I have been through 2 tanks and will be getting my thrid this week. It leaks from under the paint saver ring. I spoke with BDM and they acknowledge that there is a problem and have not developed a solution yet. Moving the cap to the center would make sense. At first I thought I was just being stupid and overfilling but that was not the case. Gas flies out at every stoplight or when you hit the brakes. I will say that they have been working with me for now but my warranty is up in October so we will see how it works out. I have to say that I love my bike and this is really the only issue I have had but the dealer has been great to work with.

I agree you sound like a nother one of those folks that should have bought a Yameha Vstar and not a custom chopper.
I am curious though did you atempt to sue the company that said your dick would get bigger if you took their pills????

:agree:
People here LOVE these bikes dude and the majority of us know they are some issues with em.
BUT, also. everyone here is willing to help another forum member with these issues...
Bad approach!

Hope you fix your shitty BDM so you can get rid of it!

Just sayin...

Hey Dude, I had this simple issue with my K-9, and the factory paint saver. Steve and those guys at BD were great they fixed it two times even after I had my bike custom Painted.. BEST fix of all was a very large easy out and a hairdryer to remove there stuff and a simple 30 minute install of a KuryAukin flush mount that screws into the tanks normal threads and extends over the damage area it has its own flush cap that fits inside. NO PROBLEMS AND LOOKS ALOT BETTER THAN THE BD CAP. Just my 2 cents

Got pictures of that flush mount gas cap?

I understand his frustration. Maybe he jumped the gun a little but you guys should cut him some slack. He did calm down in the later post and I'm sure he'll get his problem resolved. Although I'm sure in the future it will get done outside the factory by someone who does good metal work and paint before it's over. He definitely came to the wrong site to bitch because some on here believe that BDM can do no wrong and that Jesus didn't walk on water he road across it on a Big Dog Motorcycle. I'm only surprised the thread lasted this long and didn't get shut down by the Mods at the first mention of a LAWSUIT. Good luck with the PitBull I think it's BDM's best looking bike. My back just wouldn't let me ride a hardtail.

I agree with you on this one. Give the guy a break. My 08 Mutt has a cap that has leaked on and off since I bought the bike this spring. You would think a custom bike costing 25-30g's could get the gas cap right. I like my bike, but have had to do a lot of adjustments/fixes that should have not been a problem with a well engineered custom. Especially if BDM has had other bikes with the same problems. I have owned 11 bikes going back to a 1950 Harley, and haven't had one with a cap leak. I had a cracked tank, and one that sucked in because of a plugged vent, but not a cap leak.. I don't own a V-Star, but own a couple other Star bikes, and my Star Warrior will hang right with my Mutt, AND the cap don't leak even if it is filled to the brim. I think I will be checking out the Kuryakn replacement cap system. As far as a law suit, probably a waste of time and money.

Did you get the vented or the non-vented model?

If it was me, I'd call Coleman. I had a run around problem on my saddle bags. I talked with Coleman, and it was fixed-QUICK:flag:
