With the news of Raywood and Kapn124's problems in northern Texas, many of the members have brought forth the idea of an assistance program of some type. I've gotten PM's and read some posts over this topic so...

List your ideas in this thread so we can start working out a program. My biggest concern is privacy.

Also, I'd also like for everyone to nit pick at the ideas for possible problems, this way we can figure out solutions before they become problems.

I believe this will be a work in progress for some time, but with everyones ideas and input, I think we can come up with a workable solution.

I'll throw out an idea I like that member PaulHart sent to me in a PM about something similar to what we are trying to do... it's essentially State Captains and it goes like this... every state has a select few members that have access to which members are in their state and have volunteered their info to this program. When a member is in trouble, they call these State Captains and if they are not close enough to help, they can call someone who is.

Lastly, DakotaBos PM'd me about BAM What is BAM

So, we have some good ideas out already. Lets, as a group, determine what would be best for us and get this ball rolling. This can be something we continue to refine as time goes on and experience with this teaches us.

And I'm still working on a member map, maybe close to an actual working map that would assist in this program.

Another round please
You could put up a list of members and cities they reside. Then members could message them when they are figuring out the route they will take for the phone numbers of guys on that route. Or just make it all public and hope no spammers use our numbers in the wrong way. We must be careful if its all public, you dont want to get set up for a bike theft. Maybe I am just being paranoid. It is a great idea though.

Paranoid is good, brings out the down side to ideas and gives us all something to think about.

Good thinking right there. One thing to be wary of is brand new members that break down. That could get us out in the middle of the night helping folks and leave our dog on the chain at home unprotected. Kind why i was thinking the supporting members thing. Just as added security. A supporting member is less likley to jack you than a brand new member. And then theres all the members that frequently help out on threads. I wouldn't bat an eye to help some of those ladies and gents but i feel i kind of know those people somewhat.

I would be interested. I am apart of the BAM registered about 1 1/2 a ago. I have never received a call for someone needing help. I think if the Captain of the state(make it private to members only) is to be the first called there must be quailfications like: Have trailer to help transport biker- willing to lodge short term-Be knowledgeable with BDM- Willing to help out even if its O-dark thirty in the morning. Just some thought. Basically someone that will honestly will help in any way not lip service. The contacts should be private I believe. I think the supporting member is another good idea mentioned above by others. My .02

How does BAM work? Is it a phone listing?

I like the idea of listing any trailers, tools, experience, etc.... Even if it's just a garage and tools for someone to wrench on their bike and off the side of the road.

Great idea Guys. I'm in! With my location in Canada I can also help guys right across the St. Lawrence River in Ogdensburg, Upper NY State.

I think that just about everyone is using PDA's at this point. Wouldnt a post on the site be the basic starting point and then let local members contact them via PM.

I like the Capt idea as well.

Tim,

If you remember a while back there was a discussion about this that dealt with the map. I think if we can get a map going and when you place yourself on the map you could also list th things that you have available to help members out in need (bed space, shop, tools, trailer, etc). Also this could be something like the Alley that you have to opt into that can only be accessed by members( and could be even more restrictions than just that). I know the majority of the regular members here would like to have a way to get help or let others know that they can offer help when needed. I just think the map would make the best core for this with whatever tweaks need to be made to how it is run!!!

i like the idea and i am new but would like to be involved some one said something about going to help and leaveing your bike at home unprotected. how would they have your address but i do understand being safe i am a police officer in one of the worst parts of philadelphia i do think a capt for each area is a good idea but that person is going to have to be commited

A listing of State/City/Member screen name/Cell number would be ok. I don't know what kind of mischief you can cause with that info. Beside a prank call. Maybe I'm just missing something. This info would be for members only for sure. Or maybe supporting members only. That way when they pay their $25 Tim has a verified address through Paypal or something in the event something weird happens. State captains would be ok too but they would need to be available.

Oh and as far as a call out in the middle of the night for an ambush. I have a Concealed Carry License so I'm not to worried about that.

Some other info may be needed also like someone above suggested. Like do you have trailer access or not. And maybe a little box by their name kind of like we have now that tells if someone is online. This box would let everyone know if they're available or not for assistance. I know as far as I go I'm in and out of town frequently do to work.

Or we could all just have Raywoods number. He rides like 1000 miles a day anyway. If we break down he can be there in a day or two. He probably even has parts. "spare ehc"

Thanks to Tim for considering this.

I think this is a great idea, the map would be a key part to it all, I like state capt. thing, he could know all the state members info as far as trailer, tools, parts, contact info etc, good job Paul & Tim for wanting to start a program like this for our members :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

I'm in if the need arises, I have tools, lift, and truck but no trailer....It would be nice to know if there are several options in each area in case someone is away or gone on vacation....
I like the idea of a state capt, it also would be nice if we had a central contact with a toll free number or cell in case of no service or a dead cell phone so you not left stranded out in the middle of nowhere.....

It is a great idea. I am a member of another forum and we have had it for years. It is strictly voluntary and just requires name, address, and phone no./cell no. I have not used it, but some have and it can be a lifesaver. The map thing was used at first, but ended up being ditched. Too much updating and wrong info. Keep it as simple as possible.

Riders Assistance

I'm a member of the Studebaker's drivers club . They publish a roster of members' name, address, phone, vehicle and email annually and sell it to
paying members for $8.00 . I've not used it;but do carry it if on a Studebaker road trip. I think something like this is a great idea. I won't have a spare EHC but a trailer, a cold beer, and a few tools I could provide.

FREEDOM!!!
Almost sounds like a BDB club and being a member. Not saying a patch holder or anything but a just a club. Not a far stretch from what you already have constructed here.
