Bigdog had another lay-off today

Energy One

REMorris

OK Rider Shakey
So what will this do to parts, service, warranty's, and bike values if they fold???
Values will go down the shitter, dealers will fold and warranties will become meaningless just like any company that went bankrupt.

Remember, Coleman is somewhat of a "parent" company. So Big Dog might have deeper pockets than you think.

not a nice thread but some good posts. The problem is that BDM supplies a luxury item, but not luxury enough to be exclusive or even desirable to the rich and famous who are immune from the economy, hence the boat post (big ticket stuff still selling). Any business dependent on discretionary spend will suffer at times like these and it is survival of the fittest time and it seems that Sheldon ain't the fittest. Ed's post about the brass not listening to the employees is unforgivable - what a fuck up that is - what is Sheldon's background? Is it business? I don't know. To survive times like this the minimum requirement is the product needs to be exemplary and provide real value for money and that might not even be enough to get you over the line. Are Big Dog bikes really either of these things? Also, from reading some posts on a different thread there are simply too many substandard dealers out there.

I think part of the problem (I hope so anyway and that it isn't down to profiteering which ultimately is the cause of the global recession) with the pricing, especially when compared with Ford etc, is that the big car manufactures buy and produce in such huge baulk, their costs will be lower.

As for the S&S clutch being reduced to $700 - yes that is a step in the right direction but how come Bandit's clutch costs less than half that?

Every worker thinks they know everything and they can make a company run better and more efficient. If every CEO did everything employees told them, they would all go under. The fact is, if a employee thinks they can do it better, go do it. How many fired or laid off employees have anything good to say but to bash who they just left. Like he or she could be the Savior and fix everything that is wrong. Not trying to piss anyone off, just my 2 cents. I hope BDM makes it.

fair point but I'm not saying he had to do it, just that he should have listened and considered. A good leader does listen to his people, especially in such a small company.

And he may have. Decisions are tough sometimes. Hindsight is 20/20. Coleman is in a tough spot as a shitload of CEO's as I myself am in.

IMHO the dynamic that works the best as CEO is to keep an open mind and definitely encourage all employees to particpate in ideas to better the company, products, machinery, etc. Nobody knows everything and the best answers are usually not derived from one extreme/perspective or the other but rather the blending of the two. Many times employees at all levels of a company, from custodian to president, have a unique insider perspective on a company, it's problems, and ideas for solutions be they large or small.

Look at Hummer. They can't even sell it to the Japs -- their government has intervened. There is a comparative product for you.

Sad fact, but if you bought ANY custom in the last year or so thinking there would be warranty coverage, you're probably mistaken. Luckily these bikes are all the same basically, and can be worked on by the average bike owner, with a little help from a forum like this!!!! At least you Big Dog owners have this forum,(and a manual), no such thing for us AIH owners!!!

I am starting to see more and more scooters out there. They always get in my way because their top speed seems to be 40-50. Imagine if Big Dog started putting big fat tires on scooters they made with wicked paint jobs. They could also take a milk crate and have it chromed as an accessory. There is a market for those things. Just kidding... We are all in a league of our own. Those drunks would love a scooter with a 200 rear tire on a 8"rim...

I think this whole economy is just going to take some time. It didnt get fucked up overnight and it isnt going to change tomorrow. I work in the medical sales profession selling stents for your heart and we are even feeling the crunch. You would think that a heart stent for a person having a heart attack would be pretty recession proof, but it definetly isnt. People dont have jobs, which means no health insurance, which means that people either tough out their pain longer or come to the hospitals DOA. I love my 08 Pitbull and I got it just when all of this shit went south. It had been on the floor for a year and I had cash in hand and the dealer was willing to "talk numbers". Im the type that trades a lot so I will probably buy another one next year if the pricing is decent. Thats just my thoughts though.

OCC is the biggest piece of shit ever. I used to really like that show and I thought they were the greatest. Now that Paul SR. seems to be getting rid of his entire familiy, the ones who actually built that business, it is all going down hill. I would never buy a bike from a guy who fiired his own children, even if they are lazy screwups. They helped build that company and he is pushing them out to make an extra buck. I would rather buy a bike from a company that has a slight chance of closing its doors than from a guy who dicks over his own family. If he would screw his own son to make a buck he will definetly screw you.

When you are comparing prices remember that we are a low volume industry.

How many starters does chevy buy? BDM?

Well let's see... My Wolf is 3 months old and I've replaced one so far and it seems to be a pretty frequent problem with others so I'd guess quite a few. Especially if everyones going through them at a rate of 4 a year!

I wouldn't bet on BBC weathering this economic storm either. Don't they have some big lawsuits pending against them relating to frame defect issues?

I hope they ALL survive, but they're ALL going to have to quickly change their company business model dramatically in order to do so, sorry to say.

Survival of the fittest, as they say!
