Buying a dog and having shipped

Hey everyone I have a question. Has anyone ever bought a new big dog from another state and had it shipped to you home? I noticed a lot of great deals on new big dogs but they are always in another State. Since I live in Texas I think the dealers don't give as good deals because we have longer warm weather. Which in turn more time to ride. Just want to know what your experience has been if you did have a new bike shipped to you. I stress these are new bikes I would never buy a used bike without looking it over myself. I would assume if you buy a bike from another state then you can have warranty work done at a local dealership.

It can be done successfully with lots of communication! In the last 4 months, we have sold at least 6 bikes sight unseen and all are now happy Big Dog owners.

We have recently shipped bikes from Florida to TX, IL, GA, PA, NY, Ireland, England and our latest sale will go to Austria.

Lots of phone calls and emails will ensure a successful transaction. As far as shipping is concerned, Motorcycle shippers, motorcycle transporting, motorcycle movers, motorcycle carriers is excellent! We have used them on numerous occasions with great success.

And yes, any authorized Big Dog service center can do all your warranty and maintenance work.

Spiderjason, I just bought an 07 K9 off ebay from Pikes Peak HD in Colorado Springs sight on seen, had it shipped using Motorcycle Shipping Company: Daily Direct Motorcycle Transportation cost me 7 bones to have it shipped to Michigan. Went very smooth, they were very gentle with it and it arrived unharmed.

Few things I learned:

1) With the ending of riding season approaching fast, I'd have done the 2400 ml round trip with a friend and drove straight thru, because the delivery time was 14-21 days average. It actually took 30 days from the time I contacted them to get it.

2) I would ask the individuals if there are any scratches no matter how small (I did't because there description I took at face value "perfect condition" which apparently has many definitions) All though there are only minor blemishes, and I really stole it. 18k. with 1300 miles. And any machanical issues they may know off. You know normal q's.

3) I would request that if you decide to have it shipped, that they keep the battery on a tender, my battery was soooo dead, I had to charge it for a day before I could even hear it run, that sucked apon recieving my new toy.

4) Make sure you have your personal cycle insurance on it and that it covers any extras on the bike. Haul bikes has 15k insurance included with there shippment. but any extra will cost you, so just have your personal insurance on it before shippment, and that will save you a little on shipping.

I think I covered everything, other than the timing I was very happy with the shipping company.

Good luck

I purchased a bike from out of state and had it shipped. MAKE SURE WHOEVER SHIPS YOUR BIKE HAS THE APPROPRIATE DOT LICENSES/INSURANCE etc.. Otherwise-should you run into a problem you are on your own. There are a couple of sites that you can post what you are shipping, the start and end destination, and various shippers will bid. You can then compare prices and check feedback for the various shippers. ALL OF THEM WILL NOT HAVE THE CORRECT CREDENTIALS. Make sure you request proof of registrations/insurance before hiring said shipper. Good luck!

Spider,
I bought my bike from a dealer in Alabama, American Classic Cycles (they were awesome to deal with) and had it shipped to me here in Texas. I flew over and test rode it, made the deal, and flew back. They used a company called "Keyboard" to ship it...they only ship expensive pianos and bikes...cost me about $500 to have it shipped. All in all it was a great deal.

Find the state with the lowest economy. They should have the lowest prices. When I bought my dog in Texas I called Louisiana to get a more competitive price. I walked in and said you're gonna give this price or i'm gonna have to take a drive.

I was living close to Daytona Fl. and for some reason the dealership there felt they could ask about $5K more. I contacted Southern Thunder (which became BD of Atlanta).....struck a deal over the phone.....sight unseen. Their trailer and my agreement to pay one of their employees $200 to hand deliver, we were good to go. I was able to inspect the bike before handing over the final check and it was their responsibility to get it to me in perfect shape.

I don't think I would have been comfortable paying for a bike long distance, and turning it over to a transporter. Requires too much trust. If the bike is damaged, finger pointed could occur, or in the case of a used bike, you could be disappointed w/o recourse.

good luck

Watch out for taxes!! I've bought two bikes out of state and then went to register for tag and had to pay $800 for state taxes. If you buy it from an individual you don't have to worry.

question to JamesofGA

Hey JamesofGA

Now when you bought the bike from out of state from my understanding you should not have paid the taxes in the state you bought it from. Then when you register the my in Texas that is when you pay your taxes. You didn't pay sales tax in the state you bought it from and then pay sales tax in Texas did you?

That's common, you pay taxes when you register a new vehicle no matter where it was purchased. Also with a used bike you pay the taxes if they aren't up to date or at least in the states I've been to! If you buy a used bike and it hasn't been registered in a couple years during a re-build you will pay the back taxes!

In NY you pay sales tax whether the bike is new or used when you register it. And you also pay sales tax if you buy it from an individual. :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang:
