And you said this is a 2018 BigDog?View attachment 136531
And this is the inner bracket that fixes this belt cover. The "quality" of Big Dog. Rusty, ugly and stupid. When unscrewed, it falls straight inside the pulley. Not a big issue, it falls out when the bike is leaned to the right. However, this is a f... custom expensive bike! Why not at least paint it, I am not even asking to cut a thread in the belt cover or weld it to it. They would cut corners everywhere.
yes. 2018 with about 5,000 milesAnd you said this is a 2018 BigDog?
That’s a’04 & earlier starter as previously mentioned. The jackshaft bolt threads into the end of the starter. Under the head of the bolt is the washer with the locking tab that HMAN mentioned could possibly break off and allow the bolt to back out.So now I know that I have this starter)))) Does anyone know which model it is? Big Dog has a different one, View attachment 136596
The washer and the locking tab are fine. Started the bike. The starter spins but the gear stays still. I watched a couple of videos of the same problem on Harleys. That was the starter clutch issue. There is a gear that spins freely in one direction and locks the shaft in the opposite direction. It has small cylinders inside that come out and lock it. https://www.jpcycles.com/product/al...-for-harley-big-twin-1991-2006?sku_id=1085512 This looks similar. I was wondering if the one from a Harley will fit or it is more heavy duty since the engine is 2 liters? That’s a’04 & earlier starter as previously mentioned. I’m thinking it would work myself. Maybe Shannon or Knothead would know for certain. The washer and the locking tab are fine. Started the bike. The starter spins but the gear stays still. I did get the point)))) The only thing is I am located in Dubai and I want the bike back on track asap, winter is coming and it is the best riding season. I don't ride Big Dog in summer, only at night. My loyal FXDWG takes me to and from work))) I will check with our local HD tomorrow. Hope it will last for some time.I know someone who probably has a starter and any other part you need. You may have seen him on here this morning. Lmao. Sorry I just couldn’t resist
Contact either of these websites for great advice and/or parts if available. The washer and the locking tab are fine. Started the bike. The starter spins but the gear stays still. You more than likely need to adjust your clutch just a little bit to find the sweet spot for neutral. Sometimes this can take a bit of time to actually find. Most likely not a transmission problem but would be worth your while to check your shifter pawl to see if it is set correctly. Took me about a week in the evenings after work to find the right adjustment on Ridgeback clutch. I have a BDL primary on my ‘04. It’s nice & works great. Mine is the red one. Hope you get the starter deal sorted out so you can get to riding again! My local HD dealer is charging me USD 245 for just the starter clutch with 15 days delivery. Doe not make any sense. Now I have 2 things in mind:
1. To buy this Chinese starter, make the bike run again and get rid of this, so called, Big Dog Chinese shit. This will give me back a lot of free time to start spending it with my family instead of fixing this bike every second month.
2. Not to give up and fix the bike with good parts.
I might be dumb and choose the second option. in this case I have 2 questions:
1. Neutral issue. This will with only when the bike is still moving, better if I rev a bit. Once it stops, there is no way I can shift it to neutral. When changing gears it is also easier to twist the throttle a bit. Someone told me it is a clutch problem. I bought a new set of clutch and planning to install it. Question: Can there be another reason, like the transmission?
2. Shifting to an open primary. Is it worth? I like the look of it. I do understand that the close primary is more reliable, but with the general reliability of this bike I ado not care if I have to service it once in a while. Which open primary brand will fit and be the best for my bike?
That looks like a Chinese piece of junk starter…View attachment 136617
Got the starter out. Checked everywhere. No brand, model or marking. Half of the bolts were loose.
