Disconnected Battery while Running - Now Bike Wont Start....

Glenn, sorry about your problems. I have an 07 K9 as well. I used chapter 15 and the chart on page 15-8 of the manual (you can download it on the forum). It outlines exactly how to troubleshoot the charging system (battery, voltage regulator, PCB, starter, stator, etc.) step by step. I had many electrical problems that were intermittent. Would get power, stop, come back, flash the 4-ways, beep the horn, then stop again. On warm days it would start, run down the street for a few miles, and stop. Had to get towed home.

After several months of troubleshooting and replacing the starter, battery, ignition, resetting the black buttons, I finally had to replace the EHC. Not sayin this is your problem but mine started like this and the only way I could figure was to eliminate everything but the EHC. This worked for me. I hope you don't have to replace the EHC because it's expensive. Good luck. :chopper:
Well thats interesting - the other day my low beam went out on the highway. Started to troubleshoot it and it worked fine the next morning - don't know why that happened. My 4 ways would not stop flashing when I turned them on about a month ago - started working right the next morning. This bike is 8 years old now with only 10k miles. Could very well be that the ehc is starting to go. When I had my bike tore down I went through just about everything and replaced what needed replacing. I thought maybe I could escape from the EHC demon but maybe not. My brother just finished completely rewiring his 07 pitbull - had several EHC problems. Thanks for the info - I will give it the once over before I start ripping wires out - Im just glad we are headed into winter so if I have to rewire I wont be missing those dog days of summer that I love so much! Appreciate the info!

Shot in the dark, but did you make sure all your plugs are securely fastened under the EHC? My bike kept cutting out (would lose all power while going down the road), people riding with me would see my lights flicker, etc. Took out the battery and looked underneath everything to see I had a plug that was loose.

I'm with you Ker.. Once this shit starts, It's just a matter of time before your slapping on a new harness. :oldbang::oldbang:
Yepper, you can send the ECH to Curtis and have it checked out, and he'll tell you everything checks out, but this random shit will continue. If your low beam went out when you were riding and it did not switch to high beam, get rid of it (ECH) before you wreck in the dark.
I would recommend the ESC because it gas a continuous wire without connectors right up to the headlight with the ceramic upgraded headlight socket to eliminate that possible melt down problem also. And you can also get the charging monitor option added, then you can tell very easily if the bike is charging or not.

Well I hooked the battery back up this morning and still no power to bike. I made several checks using the manual including removing my key switch and putting it on the meter. All looks fine. I spent a few hours researching ECH issues and possible fixes. I will give myself another week to think about it but I'm about 90% sure I will replace with the ESC.
My wife said my gosh all you do is work on that bike and life's too short for that. I reminded her that I guess life wasn't to short for me to install a pool, build a deck, and completely remodel the house for her!!!

Maybe pull your EHC and send it to Curtis,he can do a full function test on it and send you the diagnostic print out from it and let you know whats going on...........

Can't go wrong with DOC's ESC for sure. I installed DOC's and it was quick, painless, and now running like a charm. IMHO..

Try leaving your battery cables disconnected overnight.
This may leave the ehc to power down and reset. I t worked for me once.
I had heard something to this effect with a car, remove both cables from the battery and hold them together, it will dump the cookies in the computer, It worked on my buddy's car, at this point it can't hurt to try.

What that actually does is this.....it DUMPS all the power from the capacitors in your ECM,and erases all the factory pre-set engine and trans, and BCM data values and defaults your ECM back to the original Core Values it was pre-loaded with.....So you start all over from scratch again, and have to drive many, many miles for your ECM to learn all of its values and operating thresh-hold it was programmed with.....

Just pull your EHC and send it to Curtis......most simple, fastest way to Accurately figure out whats going on...if its rat-fucked...Put a RIP Kit in it or one from Doc........

Happy Ending!! Well rather than waste time diagnosing the OEM EHC I purchased the plug and play solution from Jeff at deadonecustoms. He supplied adequate instructions and a great schematic of the new wire harness. Each wire is marked with a letter so its very easy by looking at the wire diagram where the wires go. My only issue with the whole install was figuring out how to bundle the wires under the tank and around the battery box. This was certainly not a show stopper just a little time consuming. Taking lots of pictures before you start is a good idea. When I finished the install she fired right up - absolutely no starter grunt/lag like with the OEM system - even all the lights on everything looked brighter! The kit comes with a new headlight harness with ceramic connector. I believe Jeff has a winner here - I highly recommend this install. Jeff also provides a list of recommendations on how to bullet proof your electrics whatever harness/EHC/ECS your using. Its a nice feeling knowing when there is a group of folks admiring your ride that the dam thing is going to start lol! I thank everyone here for all the helpful suggestions!

Oh in case your wondering where those fancy end caps came from on the S&S filters - I bought 2 chrome harley point covers off ebay - I then drilled out the cheap tin covers and mounted the point covers with red locktite. The holes in the tin covers are small enough so that when you put the new screws in they self tap. The screws to not poke thru the inside of the filter so there was no danger of any metal filings getting in there - I love the look...

I do believe you made the right choice rather than trying to chase a ghost. Several of us have done this (ESC) in the past 3-6 months. I'm snowed in and can't wait to roll into Daytona in another 5 weeks to ride.
Good job,:old2: now get out there and ride the wheels off it :chopper::whoop:

And I do like those filter covers:old2: looks like I have something to do:old2:

You guys that are running EFI bikes, follow this rule or you could blow out your S&S EFI ECM box. It's pretty much standard procedure as well on anything.

When disconnecting the battery: REMOVE THE BATTERY GROUND TERMINAL FIRST.
When Installing the battery: ATTACH THE BATTERY GROUND TERMINAL LAST after first connecting the positive lead.

GROUND LEAD CONNECTIONS: LAST ON AN FIRST OFF.

It's got to do with how the ECM electronics are designed internally...Delphi designed?

REMEBER: Anytime you disconnect the battery on an EFI Bigdog you must perform the EFI RESET PROCEEDURE.

PROCEEDURE:
1. Turn on KEY
2. Press the RUN button
3. Turn OFF key and let bike sit for a minimum of 15 seconds before turning ON the key again.
