Rear fender question

I took the tins in to get stripped and painted. The rear fender has got a really thick coating under several coats of paint. What exactly did BDM use to coat the fenders? I don't know if taking it down to bare metal is a good idea or not. I think the coating may be for strengthing the paint so it won't chip as easy?? Anyone know what's up with the coating???:confused:

Nobody knows huh?? I think its a heavy coat of glaze to smooth out all the imperfections ..... I noticed the tanks have it as well and the guy that did the frame said it was coated with something fairly thick also. I'll continue my research.

To the best of my knowledge, BDM would have used some putty to fill sand scratches in the metal and smooth it out for paint, but other than that, it would be the typical primer / sealer, basecoat, artwork and clear.

Airbrush Ed would know for sure though.

When I altered my tank and fenders both had a heavy coat of body filler. I had to take it down to bare metal to weld on it. Then had to put it right back on to smooth it back out

That's kinda what I was thinking Ray. The frame looks good with just the powdercoat but I'm betting I'll have to redo the tanks and tins so they'll look right after they're painted....thanks.

My 04 mastiff has fiberglass fenders. Its nice since they shed a few pounds of the bike. As far as paint. They use body filler for any imperfections. Primer, Base coat, graphics paint and finish it off with a clear coat. You only need to strip down paint til where its smooth to reprimer and repaint it.

I have yet to get a tank in all my days of painting that didnt require a few coats of plastic to make straight,well except for them HD tanks and fenders,they werent that bad...so I'd be willing to bet thats what it is.......and I know for sure the tanks from my 07 CHOPPER came from china......

Okay I just replaced my turning signal harness. On the original harness they used a epoxy to keep the wires flush to the fender. Anybody know what they used?

I wish I had more money.
Might sound kinda goofy but I used a hot glue gun and its been fine for five years.

When I was sand blasting the powder coating off my frame, I gave up and took it to a sand blasting company. They got it off, but custed me big time. They never had any powder coating come off that tuff before. If it's to help with chipping it didn't work, because this bike was ate up big time, on the front of the frame,

I just ran the wires thru some new fiber conduit and RTV'd the hell outta of it. No probs to date. Figured the rtv will be eaiser to peel out when the time comes. I also sprayed some undercoating on the whole fender as well.
