My guess is bad rings. I am sure one of these other guys that are pros with these bikes will know for sure. Welcome from Florida btw! Hope you have your bike up & running soon! 8 years is a long time to be parked....

Well like I said I am sure someone here will definitely know the answer to your question. I do know if the rings are shot & not sealing correctly it will push oil out the breather tube when the engine gets compression on it

Yes, #1, because it has been sitting, oil has drained from the tank, down into the engine. It's called sumping. Start it up and let it run for about 5 minutes, so the oil pump can pump the oil back into the tank. You might want to leave the oil cap off. If you added oil before you started it, the tank might over flow. Once the bike is warm, drain the oil and add 3 qts of fresh oil.

Sometimes the ball needs to be re-seated in the oil pump. It's in the low tower, closest to the case. Remove cap, then the spring, and finally the ball.
John
If it continues to leak you can polish the seat and put in a new ball. To do so you remove the oil pump and use an old Harley pushrod coated with polishing compound and spin the pushrod between your hands. Kind of a pain in the ass!
I find if I don't run my '02 every two weeks or so I will get a bit of oil out of the breather tube. I haven't bothered to mess with it.
Note; Many guys run their breather hose under the bike. Just have to be careful it's not spitting oil before you ride. Oil can get on the back tire and give you a wild ride! (Ask me how I know!)
