I had it right as far as I can see so there is only the large space on the left side correct?

Looks like the shock guard safety catch....it goes under the shocks and mounts to the frame on the front end of the shocks under the transmission....its incase the shocks bolts break the front of the shocks dont drop down and dig into the road and make you wreck...
