head light bucket wiring

had head light out & wondered why the black wire is about 18in longer than the rest? & coiled up & tied w/ zip ties so it would stay that way

I think it was part of a service bulletin designed to reduce spikes to EHC. I'm not too sure it really every 'did' anything as many here still have EHC issues with the newer bikes.

The harness that connects the headlamp to the system has a choke (coil) in the ground lead (see
Figure 20). The coil is to help eliminate current spikes in the case of a loose connector that could
blow headlamps. To help eliminate possible headlamp failures, always make sure that the
connector fits tight on the lamp. If the connector becomes loose, heat will be generated at the
loose terminal in the connector and could melt down.

Don't get rid of that wire whatever you do. Just leave it alone all coiled up. IOt's exactly what Guillaume said
