yes the 170 is for EVO style and the 171 is for twin cam. DO NOT get them mixed up.
True that -- putting a TC filter on an EVO makes a bloody mess of things! I know! Had it happen on my 918ST, puked oil all over the place for 2 days before we figured out what it was! (Wrong filter in the box!)

Do you want to purchase and install new filters every time or do you want to reuse a cleanable filter each time?
Just another option:
OIL FILTER CLEANABLE CHROME SPIN ON FOR ALL BIG DOGS

Kit includes canister housing, mount plate, seals and cleanable element.
Filter down to particles as small as 2.56 microns and has an intergral magnet placed in the element. Replacement stainless steel or paper elements are available separately.

Been using one like this since 2006 on my Mastiff.

I have a K&P filter and am planning on going back to the 170-c next oil change.
me too! It comes with no instructions, I have never torqued a oil filter, first hand tighten as I do with the K&N no leaks, but noticed leaking and tightened with wrench and got a little better but still weeps

Just checked K&P install instructions and they recommend 18 to 20 foot pounds torque.
this might be why some are leaking. I know they were talking about another brand but still may be the reason. Evidently "hand tight" doesn't cut it with the reusable units. The link to the instructions below is from K&P.
