I can't tell with those itty bitty pictures...but if it's bubbling at the gas cap paint is not sealed properly

I think I may be having a similar challenge....New K-9 to me, but this issue seems to be festering. The paint around my gas cap ("paint saver") is bubbling. I was thinking I'd seal with clear laquer (finger nail polish) to get more miles before repainting. I love the harlequin flames and wouldn't mess with em otherwise, but if I have to repaint, there will only be more color. Any other ideas to save time/$ on cosmetics would be appreciated.

Edit to post: Wow! Lots of threads/discussion on this topic. Just search paint saver or bubbles.....looks like Mr Wright has a solution. PM sent.

as a painter for Big Dog Motorcycles. the paint saver around the gas cap. Only proved to work well about 70% of the time. a little finger nail polish. Can help for a little while. But it really comes down. To being repaired. And unless you remove the paint saver. And reapply it correctly. There's still a 30 percent chance it will still fail. most to all of big dog's paint repair work. came from failed paint savers & side covers. when aftermarket exhaust was used.

I had to return my Bulldog tank to Bigdog because the tank liner turned into a big gumball and the paint was lifting by the paint saver. They relined the tank and fixed the paint problem without me even asking about the paint.

When I bought my K9 (used) the right side cover had some mild blistering and this was with the stock pipes, maybe it sat in too many parades. I put mean mothers on it and the blistering has not changed and I don't do parades. :)

liners I hate those things. they fix the paint probably cuz you were still under warranty. Or they just didn't like things being bubbled. exhaust pipe side cover bubbles. Were generally caused by running and not moving. or at a Sturgis parade yes. but to find out the true answers you need to find someone who was in R&D.

There were sets of pipes 3 years ago when this thread started that came close to the covers or were not installed properly. The heat caused problems. Your Yaffe pipes will not affect your covers.

Back to Topic of Gas Cap Paint Saver & paint bubbles:
...wanted to respond to this aspect specifically within the overall thread in case there was any misunderstanding.

a) Remove old cap flange/saver, Landmark stock OEM on Big Dog, (was there a gasket? if so WRONG!)
b) Contact "Mr. Wright" to get a custom over size "Paint-Saver-Ring"
c) Dry fit all
d) Glue down loose paint chips/bubbles with crazy glue, xBon, or equivelant super glue
e) Permatex RTV Silicone (clear color) the heck out of the top of tank, bottom of new "Paint-Saver-Ring"; masking tape around perimeter of area to avoid excess Silicone ooze and inside of gas tank flange...
f) Torque flange down over new "Paint-Saver-Ring"
g) Let dry, NO GAS, No cap, for 4 days.

If you used the rubber gasket --WRONG! It will surely leak with the gasket on a Big Dog tank.
Going on 2 years now since I fixed mine and no bubbles or leaks. Never fill gas above bottom of gas tank inner fill neck about 1.25" down from top of tank flange.
--Thanks "Mr.Wright"! (one of the Best Inovators on here!).
