Tag mount plate

2004 Big Dog Chopper - but I have now had 2 issues with plate welded to frame for tag bracket.
1st - original tag bracket - mounted to welded plate with 1/2 bolt - snapped the plate just below thew the bolt holt - bolt fell out- tag was dragging by light wire.

@nd bough aftermarket - mounts with 2 1/4-20 bolts - mounted tag vertical this time - and same thing - 1 1/4 bolt - snapped the frame plate - 1/2 way in hole and allowed bolt to come out??

Any heard of this?? I dont understand what is causing the frame plate to snap? It sees no real weight- vibration?? WTF?? lol

I will try and get some pics - But basically the plate everyone has is cracking through bold holes and letting the bolt fall out.

At first I thought maybe it hit when i turned left - as it was mounted horizontal - though it thought primary belt drive would hit first??

But after this second break - from a hole i drilled - I was thinking woman was standing on it or something. Maybe put her on a diet??? but the more i look its just not that close to the foot peg - nor would it be comfortable?? so?????

My first thought is stepping up to a higher grade bolt (like Grade 8), but we definitely need to see what could be causing the issue. Is there any scraping on the bottom edge of your plate holder that would indicate it made contact with the pavement during a left hand turn?

Nope - no scraping - and higher grade bolt isn/t the solution, the bold isnt busted - bolt and nut on bold are still on the mounting bracket when the frame plate breaks. I'm actually busting the plate in the frame (between the swing arm tubes). The only purpose of that plate is to hold the tag, and its literally snapping off?? Maybe it was too hot when welded and it brittle?? I really dont know if anyone has seen this or not??

Oh now I understand. I'm not a welder, so I can't offer any solid info pertaining to that process but what you said sounds like a possibility. Someone with welding experience will chime in here I'm sure.

If the plate is breaking out from the bolt holes, I believe the problem could, ( that is COULD ), be due to the edge of the holes being sharp, something called "stress risers". If the holes have a smooth radius to both sides of the plate, a lot of the stress is spread out over the plate instead of right at the edge. Not sure where your plate is breaking, but I think you said at the holes. Am I correct in that ? And you're right, there's a lot of vibration going on down there.

Do you have washers in between the bolt and where it mounts into the bracket. There is allot of vibration in our bikes and the washers help distribute the force. I am thinking you should have a washer and a lock washer in between the head of the bolt. The washers will also keep the bolts tight

excellent idea- i dont have a washer- and come to think of it my old one did not as well?? I guess it is vibration cracking the plate - but damn i've just never seen it before and i've broken it twice in a year - smh
