How often... really?

How often... really? Is what I thought when I kept hearing about a loose clutch hub nut until...WHAM!!! I've got a loose nut (yeah, that too but that's another story).

I finally got around to changing the fluids when I discover a loose clutch assembly... I have to admit, I stared at it for a while in disbelief.... it wasn't that way 4K plus miles ago! Well, I guess I'll be removing the primary cover for EVERY oil change.

Everything looks good except when I removed the clutch assembly the transmission seal began to leak....
Question...can I just R&R the seal in place or do I have to pull the transmission? This is like working on old plumbing... you work on one end of the pipe...it starts leaking on the other.

I move on island time but I've GOT to make it to Biketoberfest!!! Hmm, I guess If I start pushing now I might just make it in time....

Curtis at wild steed worx has both. Just did mine. Torqued with red loctite to 150ftlbs and then let it sit overnight before I put it back together and filled the primary. New nut/washer and new tranny seal and o-ring. Parts are cheap, taking it back apart sucks.

Don't be shy with the Red on that Nut and do 150 ft/lbs. Won't have to worry about it again.

I did that and I've checked mine a few times since and probably about 8k miles and its all good!

Hey Gil, I just replaced my hub nut, washer and pressure plate with upgraded components and I found seeping at the inspection plate and took care of that yesterday so I’ll ride and check for leaks again. In any case, if the tranny seal is leaking I won’t mess with mine until it gets worse. Riding up to Daytona next week and don’t want to mess with anything like that right now, lol. I’m dreading having to heat the nut up to get the loctite loose so hopefully no leaks.

Unfortunately not gonna be at biketoberfest... On my radar one year though. Rather do that one than Daytona, which is too early in the spring and still cold and wet.

Biketoberfest is a nice time and a little calmer, lol. Leesburg puts on a nice small rally in April that’s always a good time.

One other note.. Yes you can do the seal and not remove the transmission but mihht want to check if there is any play in the mainshaft.

When these clutch hub nuts get loose they really hammer the main bearings.

Gerald, if your trans fluid was leaking you would be able to detect that gear odor even if you couldn't see it...very distinct. With mine it was like it was going to take a piss right in front of me as soon as I got the clutch assembly off. Lucky I was told and looks to be an easy fix. I usually wait till the last minute to do any prep... glad I got to this one early.

I'll be looking forward to meeting you at Biketoberfest!

You’re right Gil, my mistake. I only had a primary leak at the inspection cover that ran down, red fluid and no odor. A little silicone and new gasket along with an updated billet cover from Donna and Derek. I was so concerned about it did not even occur to me that we were talking about two different things. River grill 1pm is the plan sir.

Mine was loose but not sloppy where I could see it. Once I put a socket on it it came right of with no force needed. Hopefully no bearing issues.

I got some news for ya, the tranny fluid will come out if its a little on the full side if you removed the clutch hub assy or pull it out some, the back of the clutch hub assy is what goes against the seal on the tranny to seal it, there's nothing wrong with your seal.

Yeah, I thought about that. I was thinking of releasing the pressure on the drive belt and looking for play then it was like... do I really want to LOOK for trouble right now or slap it together and RIDE to Biketoberfest next week. This will be a short instate run so I'll look into it later but you're absolutely correct... it's best to examine the whole drive. I just hate putting the bike on the jack 'cause it means I can't just get on it and ride when I need too..

Don't need to take drive belt off you can check for play taking the clutch basket out.

Just pull it off and grab it and try to move it up/down , side to side, in/out. Shouldn't be able to move it at all and then you are good, not even a little.

Hopefully it doesn't look like this...

You don't have to loosen the belt to feel if the bearing has play or was beat up on the clutch side like Eric was suggesting, you will be able to feel the movement if it has any.

Whaaaat???? Yeah, the trans fluid didn't begin to flow UNTILL I pulled the clutch assembly off. I looked at the seal and it appears that the assembly fits INTO the seal. Am I correct with that assumption?
