Gas/Fuel tank Cap size????

Energy One

Tried to search, but "cap" is too short (as is "gas") and "fuel cap" gave 100's of results that had the word "fuel" in them....

1999 Pro Sport. I ordered caps based on same year Harley Dyna (have been told that is closest in terms of repair manuals etc) and the opening on my tank is much smaller.

The parts I got were Drag Specialties Part DS390281 and DS390282.

Can anyone give me a part #, or an appropriate Harley model that I can use to order them?

The http://asset.lemansnet.com/static/sites/dragspecialties/flipper/2017_fatbook_v2/#?page=1438 Drag Specialites catalog (p.1439 if that link doesn't go direct) has caps with "Paint Protectors" and that looks like what my tanks have. Is that what I need?? The paint protector part is still in my tanks (caps had to be cut off and are long gone). I really just need caps and would rather not spend $65 and $55 :-o

Here is my tank and the cap (new one that is too big)

ETA: picture seems to not be loading, don't have a file service that will let me since photobucket blocked links.....

IF you can remove the paint savers (screwed in with JB Weld), a standard HD cap will work. They can be a bitch to remove tho...other than that, back to a Landmark cap. Do a google and they will popup.

We're they really running those paint savers in 99? I can't see the pics the OP posted.

I have a 2000 Bull Dog .... same issue. I removed the 'paint saver' repainted the tank and bought some flush mount 'pop up' caps. $25 each.

Hman, thanks for getting the picture to appear :)

I sent an e-mail to landmark (http://www.landmarkmfg.com/) which I *think* is the right company (website says nothing about motorcycle parts, but phone message did).

Here is another old thread with same problem and it appears Landmark will sell the cap alone (with updated Ethanol reistant plastic apparently!!) http://www.bigdogbiker.com/threads/landmark-gas-caps.18551/
J&P sells landmark caps.

The linked one from JP is only the vented, I don't see that they also have "Landmark" non-vented (I need both).

Is https://www.denniskirk.com/drag-spe...nt-protector-0703-0199.p183563.prd/183563.sku the same cap? Says "Drag Specialties", but I'd assume Landmark made it. JP has what looks the same and a little cheaper for both (https://www.jpcycles.com/product/720-0034 ). How can I be sure the cap threads will match my inserts? Hoping to get best price, but will order one that specifies "Landmark" if I need to.

Landmark says the "used" to manufacture but no longer do and don't have any replacement parts. Only found one on Ebay (non-vented, but again I need both) so I think I'm stuck buying a whole set and throwing away the protector part.

BUTCH CASSIDY: how hard was it to remove???? You say you repainted, was that because removing the paint saver messed up the tank/paint? My paint is good and repainting is not an option.... If they are JB welded in place (as HMAN said) then I need to find replacement caps that fit.

Post back on what you do or dont find. I MAY have a set of left/right caps only off the Pit. I need to dig around a bit.

Well this is what I was able to come up with. Left and right Landmarks. Not perfect so lower expectations compared to new. Ifn ya cant find any, lemme know.

HMAN, I may buy those off you if for sale.
Was hoping to buy new caps to get the new alcohol resistant threads (?). All the ones I find as "Landmark" are out of stock. J&P has them, but only the single (vented) and I'd need one of each.

Landmark says buy the ones I found online (before I realized they were all out of stock) but also to check fitment. All the fitment information is regarding Harleys, so I'm not sure what model I would need even if I found them :-(

I sent BBChopper a message as I understand he does something with the caps (aluminum threads to replace the plastic, I think)

You are correct. I have a set that BB did for me. The ones in the pic are plastic still. PM me your address and they are yours.
