Eric's a genius! Daymaker

It's not the bulbs that are the problem, it's the reflector.
The reason the DayMaker works so well is because as a capsule you are buying an LED bulb & a reflector that are designed to work together. LED is not only brighter, it distributes its light different thus, you will never achieve optimum results placing an LED bulb in an Incandescent reflector.
I currently struggle with this. Choosing style over function, I'm sticking with my wolf headlight, and just accepting less than stellar performance.
Bingo.

On Amazon there are so many different versions? Anyone know the product number and manufacturer? Thanks!

Picked one up about a month ago from amazon, unfortunately it's still sitting in the box. Installing a whole new harness and plug too as mine got a little fried and I patched in an auto parts store plug for now. So just haven't had the time to pull the tank and get the harness and light in. Someday...........

When I looked at mine it looked slightly melted too. Are the factory bulbs just that hot?

Yea, the HID bulbs are hot, but what melds the plugs is a loose connection. What ever bulb you go with, take some needle nose plyers and crimp the connectors, so the plug fits tight.
I've seen a few posts saying that. I always crimp sliding connectors to make sure they are tough to get in.

Mine was a couple problems. The last owner switched to the ceramic plug and did a horible job splicing it in and for some reason cut the ground wire under the tank and grounded the connector to the headlight bucket. All the above combined with loose fitting tabs fried my ground at the plug. So I picked up an entire headlight harness with ceramic plug already installed to put it back the way it should be.

thats the bad thing about buying most of these bikes. I got mine with 2 previous owners. Both took good care of it but there's no way to know what they did and if they just threw things together. One reason why I like to work in it myself. So I can become familiar with it. What's right and what's wrong with what they did.

Running 75mph on a mountain pass, does the new light put out usable light or is it more of a reflective light? I have an LED light now that works fairly well but find I am still overdriving the light on some night runs.

I'm going to venture to guess that the response here will give you a positive on that. There are some good LED's though depending on which one you have and your adjure.
