Hey everyboby:
its been forever since my last post, im so totally disgusted with this whole big dog bike bullshit I could just scream. so here it is, I own the 2005 big dog chopper which is currently on its third, say it with me kids, third baker clutch in less than 30.000 miles. sound about right? The first original I could not get to stop slipping so on Bakers recommendation I changed to their 9 disc easy pull which tore itself apart in a lil less than 5000 miles. All the while not knowing because I wasn't informed by anyone that Baker had a updated clutch for the bike which leads to clutch number three. Upon and right after installation I was in heaven, the clutch preformed beautifully with no slip what so ever, smooth operation and relative easy pull. Short lived however, now after a whopping 4000 miles it has developed a squeal when I apply about a quarter pull on the clutch lever both in and out which gets a little louder every time I ride. Ya that's what I thought so I replaced the throw out bearing but no. So here I am with approx. $4500 in two clutches parts and labor looking at another repair bill for yet another clutch issue way before its time. I take my bike to reputable shops only to get hosed time after time not only with this but others issues as well. I think its a f&^%ing crime that we have to shell out this kind of money on these bikes most of which are extremely low mileage. I waited 35 years to fulfill a dream of one day having a chopper like this only to have my dream replaced by this nightmare. I apologize for the rant but I"M really at wits end with no help in site.

does the clutch seem to be slipping now or is it just squealing? could it just be the clutch push rod bent a little or maybe just rubbing and needing lubed? you said you replaced the throw out bearing, did you also replace the push rod? (if so, maybe it wasn't lubed when it was installed, that would cause it to squeal) were the clutch plates soaked in ATF or dino primary fluid? some have run synthetic in the primary without a problem and some have a lot of slippage. just some questions may point in the right direction, maybe not.

$4500 in 2 clutch replacements would tell me they saw you coming, I'm still running original clutch at 16K without slippage. I don't know what your skill level is, but I would sure start reading up on it and try it yourself or as you said, wrong bike for you, unload it.:2cents:

I'm not as good as Sven but:

Drain primary fluid
Pull outer cover
Remove clutch hub nut
Pull clutch pack
See what color clutch spring is, newer, stronger replacement one is BLACK and has been used since 2008....
Inspect all clutch plates and CLEAN in ATF
INSPECT CLUTCH CARRIER BASKET
Check/inspect compensator cog
Make sure all bolts are tight to spec

Re-install.....

Drink beer during process for double vision......hahahahaa

Sorry @stephencs, I have been enjoying some small cock-a-tails today....

BEFORE you DO anything, a squeal is more BELT related than chain related.....or is it a mechanical squeal?

Ditto.... Replacing a clutch is easy so you got hosed.... you pay for what you don't know. I put a dry clutch in one of my bikes and at 180k it was still going strong. I'd do some research and take some advice from the guys above. Good luck.

Squeal can be caused by the push rod. Pull that damn thing and lube it good with high temp (EP) grease and definitely lube the end that makes contact with the throw-out bearing. Mine did that until I lubed it with the grease... Just saying!

Load that bike up and take it to Wildsteedworx. There are thousands of us who enjoy our bikes everyday when the are properly repaired and maintained. Good luck!

Ok, well I'm more than a little embarrassed but the teaspoons worth of grease on the pushrod did the trick, she's quite and smooth once again. Thanks too Brew and all others with the positive words, you've taught me a lesson at the ripe ol age of 64.
The MAIN REASON Big Dog Biker exists is to share knowledge so all of us can become experts on our own bikes. I dumped my Baker clutch when the nut backed off. I figured since I had to get into the primary, I'd fix a weak spot... and I installed a Bandit Bruiser clutch assembly.

It's good to hear you have fixed your problem.

I was just at a shop this weekend and they had a k9 in there doing the same thing
. These guys have never done me wr9ng and know what they r talking about and he showed me factory gears etc that were all aluminum and the new parts offered are all steel guaranteed to give you 10000 miles he says.. u might want to check into that if that's not the kit u have already installed.. another thing he brought to my attention was the springs. Unless they r broke don't change em.. otherwise Springs can't handle what is needed of them for your clutch to respond correctlt

Tim,
I’m tired of goofing around with either slipping or dragging the clutch on my 07 Mastiff. Is this a full clutch assembly I can just drop in or was there other mods you needed to do? I just sent them an email for more info

I really appreciate everyone’s input re: clutch issues. Been having problem w my ‘07 K9 jumping out of gear. Took it to a shop three weeks ago. I called him Friday for an update and he chews my ass for not telling him about indicators on the bike’s performance - things I told him twice (over the phone and while he filled out the work order. I had to call him cuz he wrote my ph # down wrong. So, since I’ve already replaced a broken clutch cable and rebuilt my forks (thanks to you guys) I did “pre-op” and studied the SM clutch nomenclature and sequence til I had it memorized like the 82nd Jumpmaster Course. Went by the shop this a.m. and brought it back to MY lift.
PROBLEM: it jumps out of gear then stalls. If I accelerate enough I can go through the gears traveling but it stalls out -or wants to keep going- when I down shift.
QUESTIONS:
1. Does this sound like sticking clutch plates?
2. Is it simply a pawl adjustment?
Thanks
