Busted it good!

So Blacktopper, my cousin Curtis and I were in Myrtle Beach last week for the Rally, and my bike started acting funny in two ways: the starter began clicking and whirring, and my clutch felt like it was dragging, and in Myrtle Beach, believe me you get a lot of chances to experience how the clutch performs while sitting at stoplights......clutch dragging hard, but strangely, it was easy to shift to neutral.
Anyhow, both symptoms got worse as we worked our way home. The starter was unreliable. It would kick out or just whir, and we had to pull the bike to jump start it. Fortunately, we've learned, and Blacktopper always carries a 25 foot nylon rope..
Anyhow, finally we got the damn thing home after riding 300+ miles without stopping the engine.
Tore it down today and this is what we found:

For you non-mechanics, this is the backside of the bucket that holds all of your clutch plates. It's called the bearing carrier. I would love to know what you guys think would have caused this failure.
Happily, Roger had a spare on the shelf was feeling generous, so he gave it to me. Easy to fix, and I suspect it will solve my starter problem as well. I am amazed that it got me home, but sustained running at 75 mph, smooth as glass.....I noticed the clutch was slipping a bit....otherwise all was good. It rubbed a little groove on the inside of the inner primary, but that's of no consequence.
My cousin Curtis rode my '10 Street Glide, and it started running rich at low rpm...choking out...but ran great at road speed. With two bikes screwing up, I was ready to trade both at the nearest Honda Dealership...a great Service Manager named Chief at Appleton Harley in Clarkesville, TN explained it was my Power Commander beginning to fail....not too hard to fix.
Should have Doggy barking tomorrow or the next day. After getting everything torn down to the inner primary and pulling the exhaust and all to get the starter out, re-assembly will take some hours.

You guys are the luckiest guys on the face of the earth.
I swear they are Shannon, they did something right in their previous lives. If my basket breaks I'd bet I would been stuck somewhere not close to home.

Hey Rick, there is an upgraded basket from Baker that one in your pic is the cast old one. The new one is machined out of billet. Did Rodger have one of the new ones? Might want to look into it while you got it apart so you'll never have to worry about it again. Although you got 60K miles out of that one.

I'm actually surprised you got that many miles out of the stock carrier.

Kinda looks like one of those optical illusions where the stairs never end. How the Hell did you do that?

You were lucky alright! Cruising at 75 MPH with a basket like that could have been a bad situation, the man upstairs was watching out for you... :oldwtf:

The spare is a very low miles OEM cast. I am not particularly hard on clutches, so will probably see if I can nurse this one along for several years. But you are right, billet is definitely a solution. I'll replace it if it misbehaves.
The clutch nut never did loosen, but when I took off the primary, the clutch basket moved....of course it did, because all the spokes were broken!
Eric, you make an interesting point--you've definitely got my interest up to see how common this problem might be. I would like to hear from others who have had carrier failures, as well as high mileage bikes without any issues....
Blacktopper put in a Bandit clutch when he built his engine on the '07, so it doesn't count. His '10 K9 has low miles without issues.
But that Carrier was really put in a lot of bikes, I guess. I wonder what the actual failure rate is?

I thought so too until I got to looking at it. The whole thing is held in place by the disc springs, and the broken spokes on the Carrier were at different places on each spoke, so you wouldn't think it could rotate. When it is locked up and running in 6th, it seems the worst stress would be on the clutch plates..and they were slipping some. And of course the starter trying to find that ring gear--it was amazing that it started sometimes...right up to when I put it on the lift.
And it looked like it could have put a bit of a bind on the transmission input shaft. But the crank pulley wants to keep it all straight too. Andrew rebuilt that, and it's tight as can be, without leaks. Maybe somebody with a lot more expertise than me can comment on this.

My 06 mastiff had the nut backing off issue, and the assembly made a nice grove in my primary, but did not break the basket. I disassembled everything and checked for wear and cracks but to my relief all parts were in working order other than a bunch of alum. Casting chips all seemed ok. Still haven't tested it, been waiting on spectro primary oil but got stiffed from the arsehole selling it on the bay. So tomorrow I'm going to the local HD dealer and getting the HD primary oil. Been down for two weeks waiting on parts ect. I've only ridden it 50 miles since I bought it. Hopefully all my issues will be cured. I didn't see anything that looked bad so I got out the old red loctite and torqued her down. Was so glad to find out the basket wasn't broken..... I don't have any cool friends like you do that would hook me up with a replacement basket!!! Glad he had it for you, that had to make your day!! Glad to hear you made it back safe too!!

Lucky guy, the starter ring looks like it got chewed up pretty good, did you replace that? if not I don't think your problems are completely over. I just replaced mine 6-8 months ago cause the starter gear was catching on the rough teeth of the starter ring and I was experiencing a BANG when trying to start.

I imagine the failure rate IF the clutch hub nut never backs off is probably quite low unless you were hard on your clutches I would imagine.

However, I look it as its just one more item to fail. On my quest to make my K9 as bullet proof as possible that carrier is one of the next upgrades I'd like to do. Might not happen until this winter though. I'd like the bandit setup but the Baker one looks great too. I don't need the extra grab of the Bandit I'm not hard enough on my clutch, mine never slips as is.

I was just looking I'm not sure this price is accurate but you can buy the bandit carrier alone for $136? Don't need the whole getup

the carrier is available alone I think, not from Baker, but maybe from Bandit.......reuse your old clutch pack etc.....I'd replace the clutch hub nut though too while you're at it with a new one.....

The whole assembly with inner carrier is around $400 I think....

I'm gonna call Bandit today and see if that price is accurate. That's why I am mentioning because Baker is really proud of their carrier comes with the inner hub and carrier is $400...ouch.

Inner hub is $125 and if the bandit is $136 then you are out the door with all good parts for $260 instead of $400.
