First dyno

Energy One

Recently ran my first dyno on my 08 mutt 117, countless $ and hours building this engine and I built this engine myself. Numbers seem very weak for the work I've put in. My flow charts from my head work state that drag pipes can cause losses of up to 20hp compared to a good 2:1. I'm running bassani sweepers that sound great and look good. Don't get we wrong, this is a completely different bike after the upgrades, but the numbers don't quite show. Dyno guy said this should be a 130/130 engine, and a good 2:1 will should get me there, he also said my hp curve falls on its ass at 4500rpm due to the pipes. Wondering what you're thoughts are on hp losses with "drag" style pipes?

Funny story about that..I rebuilt it myself a couple seasons ago when my mainshaft bearing failed, ran great until yesterday..found I'm missing a cage bearing between my mainshaft and 3rd gear inside the case..unbelievable

Not good..I guess I'd rather start saving for a transmission that's going to hold the power rather than rebuilding something over and over again. Engine has been bulletproof since the build, it's a constant struggle trying to keep this primary/transmission in running order.

20HP just from a change in your set of pipes sounds a bit much don't you think? I'd give you 5 MAYBE 10? and that's a stretch. What is your intake? The Spike intakes are not really any good for HP either. I think the S&S dual runner is about as good as it gets in that dept.

You never said what you did to this motor? Some guys have dyno'd their basically stock 117 around the 100-105HP mark. I think a few with just a 585 or 600 Cam have hit that. You are pulling almost 130 torque that's pretty good.

John Sachs is the guy who will tell you what you what you can do with these motors. I just judge by my seat dyno...she skoots. lol

Port and polish heads with 2.06 intakes, comp cams valve springs, s&s roller rocker upgrade, decked heads and jugs for 10.5 CR, dual runner intake, Daytona twin tech internal ignition, red shift 626 cam, xxx carb with thunder jet, bandit bruiser clutch, 32 tooth Trans pulley, all the goodies. I agree with the seat dyno, can't help the feeling that a good 2:1 will get the most out of this engine, but the options are so limited. I think 20hp is also a stretch, too many variables. I wish I had a pile of 2:1"s to try and see which one worked best!

Dyno guy was pushing D&D boarzilla, said it's made for big inch v-twins with mods, made my ears perk up a bit but they will not fit the wide swing arm.He wasnt too impressed with my selection of exhaust either. I'll have to look into that, thanks.

Don't know which bassani sweepers pipes you have, but they offer a 2-1 set up as well. I don't think its your exhaust that is causing the dive on the dyno. my opinion is fuel either not enough or to much. Your exhaust might rob you of maybe 5 HP on the top end. Keep in mine that you have 32 tooth gear in the trans pulley which is more RPM like 300 or better at the top so you may be running out of fuel. I would Jack up primary to the next size from what you have and see what it does. :2cents:

Carlos, shouldn't the thunder jets give it some extra fuel on the top end? I am not sure how they work.

They look just like V&H big radius. I made this 32 tooth pulley so I could use my 6th before 70mph. Seems like a big gap between my hp and tq numbers, my thunder jet should be taking care of any lean condition, but it could still be a jetting issue. I can't even remember what jet sizes I have anymore, xxx carb set me up with what they thought I needed and it's seemed good so far.

If Brendan had a fuel problem it should have shown up in the air fuel ratio numbers from the dyno. He has the torque he just needs to get it up a little higher on the RPM band.

Seems like he should be hitting higher numbers with those mod's. I would expect more from the tuner than just you should just go to a 2-1

What's strange is I figure with a 620 cam above 4000 would be where it starts to take off.

Although I just looked up that cam and it's designed for torque. Shifts power to low RPM between 2,200 and 5,500. Could be your cam selection

It very well could be.

Not sure how your head work is done, but their really opened up then they want higher rpm. My Hillside build was about 134hp/138tq. I wanted more. Society I went from a woods 9F which was a midrange to a S&S 631. Big difference. Might be too radical for you tho. Need to be sure of your valvetrain also.

image.jpeg Going back to your original question on HP & pipes. Yes with no back pressure on the valves you will loose horse power . Some pipes cause quite a lot of HP loss like drag pipes while some 2 into 1 do not add hp while others build HP. I did a lot of research in this and two of the biggest names agree the Thunder Header 2 into 1 builds more power than any other exhaust system on the market. Eddie Trodda and Kendall Johnson told me this 4 yrs ago when I built up my 88 EVO motor in my 1996 Ultra Classic. The cherry on top was my 2 into 1 Thunder header. I am Dynoing 98 Hp as of 6 months ago when I upped my injector size!
