Saving Your Plate Light From Water Damage

Here is a quick fix for the BDM license plate light water damage problem. The plate frame gets water in it easily and can't drain it. So, I came up with a drain fix to get the water out of the LED panel area.

If you remove your plate trim frame and remove the LED light mount from the main panel/bracket via the two bolts on the under side it will look like this:

Now, you can see in that pic that the water sits in that little wire groove and can't get out and eventually corrodes the LED board. I took and used my Dremel with a small ball end bit and cut a drain groove out to the lower side of the frame (you can see it in the lower left corner where the water sits)

Also, after installing I sealed up the top groove where the wire comes down so that water can't get in like before:

I then, before puting it all back together sprayed the entire curcuit board with the marine silicone conformal coating by TECHSPRAY (2102-12S Fine-L-Kote SR) Stuff works great and I coated all my boards on my bike:

Many Thanks

Thanks bdmridgeback, living in FL with not just rain but high humidity this will help keep all my lights on. Sounds like I should conformal coat just about everything to keep the moisture out. Now how about a fix for the speedo getting fogged up even in dry warm (not hot) weather - mine is fine for about 6 or 7 miles and then fogs up.

The only thing I have not conformal coated was the speedo. I am going to do it this week and will do a complete breakdown how-to on it!
Sorry to steel business from you Gas!

No worries.. but I already posted how to break down the speedo... just add to it, to have peeps coated it.

What brand, type, where, and how much for that coating spray? Maybe I'll do all the boards this winter when the bike is in pieces.

I was wondering with the speedo... if we filled the wire hole in the rear with silicone would help?

And yes I know the speedo is suppose to be a sealed unit... but work with me here.

Here you go:

Here is what you need & where I bought mine: The 2102-12S

But I also picked up some Radio Shack control/contact cleaner & lube (similar to that link) to run on it to clean the boards. I was told it would provide a bit of lubricant to keep the board and connections from corroding. But I think I may pick up some sealant as well.

Can never have to many aresol cans in the garage...

That is cool Dave but for you.. just come down and use some of mine... no reason to buy more..

Also, after I did my groove out mod for water release... I noticed the same thing could be acomplished by simply drilling a small 1/8" hole at the bottom of the channel. It would only be one more hole in amungst the other 48 million holes on the backing plate.

My current bike and my last mastiff both have experienced the LED flicker and neither has ever been in water that would cause a problem. Not saying it's not a good idea.
