Thumbs up Oil Pressure Gauge

After getting caugh in a classic car cruise traffic jam (downriver cruise) I wanted to revist the idea of a gauge. After talking with AlHall he told me about Vickie's suggestion.

Now unlike some of those that run it with a Y splitter in the area of the already existing oil press sensor. Vickie tipped the hat on where KC puts theirs. In the tappet screen hole.

Here's what you will get from Vickie

Sifton 0-60# Blue Face gauge
Part #VT40-0571 Retail: $32.55

Oil Press Gauge Fitting Kit
Fits: Big Twin 1970+
2 pieces & O-ring
MFG #2012
Part #MU85101 Retail: $10.99

All for basically just under $40.

Installation is simple.

Remove tappet screen cap with the 7/16" socket.

Pull the tappet screen(why not) inspect and clean.

Re-install

Spin in first piece ensuring the o-ring is in place. Use a 3/4" open ended wrench to get in tight.

Apply some pipe dope (sparingly with your fingers) and spin in the 45 degree piece with a 9/16" open ended wrench and position to wear you will want the gauge.

Apply some pipe dope to the gauge threads and spin into place using the same 9/16" wrench and position.

And bam. Start motor and check for leaks. Don't be surprised if the motor and oil is already hot that you only get about 10# of press.

And I can see it while riding.

Looks good GS! Cool
One of the reasons for running in the back is to get it away from the exhaust pipe. I've melted two (no shields on my pipes) gauges so far. Up North where you are you may not see hot enough weather but in Southern Kal the little rubber seal on the side would melt draining the fluid and then the needle would fail.
Just a thought!

later,
Ray

Good thing to consider Ray... do you think the rubber on mine facing outward will help me avoid this for me?

Orange & Dingo... thanks... I do try.

Well that rubber seal didn't last. It didn't melt.. it just poof GONE! Leaking the clear gague fluid all over the side of the motor. (***) Only in about 20 miles.

Called Vickie on it and she said she was worried about the last batch of sifton gauges as she saw this batch said made in tiawan.

So she said, send it back and she overnighted me a new and better Auto Meter. With the Auto Meter, there is no rubber filler, and you have your choice of silver, black, and yellow (not sure) faces. The black face not only matches my bike but also the speedo.

Auto Meter #2173 0-60lbs
#649025 $32.97

Installed and seems to work really well! I simply love the look and the placement. Its easy to read and with out it being on the rocker box I don't have to deal with the lines and possible more fittings to leak.

RUN FOR COVER !

Hi all:

Just wanted to let everyone know that they manufacture some pretty cool Remote Oil Gauge "Covers". They do dress up the gauge and add just enough bling to look cool and flashy, without looking too busy.

They look pretty cool and cover up the black plug that so many gauges have.

The only down side is that they have to be installed prior to installing the gauge, and some are applied by using silicone. Just wanted to let you know.

Ride Safe and God Bless America
