New VR around a $100 bucks. No you can't go around it. You could disconnect it from the system and ride untill the battery gives up but that wouldn't take long and you risk screwing up the EHC. Double check you connections I wonder if you got a wire crossed or something. Be sure to get a 40 amp VR.

Why does it need to be a 40 amp? I don't think they put them on the bikes anymore..

Good question. I know when the service bulletin/recall came out way back when someone on here put on a lesser amp regulator and said it was workin good, don't know who thou.

Would it make a diff to put a lesser amp VR on with the existing stator?

I'm using a 32 amp compufire. Although its rated at 32 it will cope with a lot more

There was also a recall on VR begining with the 05 models, you might call your dealer and have them run your VIN number and see if it's covered under warranty......

If you look under the technical section there is a catagory for recalls. The one for the Ridgeback is listed. On the back of your VR is a code number and that will determine if it was a affected unit

I had the recall done and watched them look at it and thats why I figured thats what it was since the sound came from that direction...Now the bike just makes the starter hit 1 time...It wont turn over..

The first time the VR went on my bike the battery exploded, blew a hole in the side of it, and the EHC went with it. The second VR that went out took the battery with it as well but not the EHC. Both of those were before the VR recall. After the second one, I ripped all the charging system out and installed a Compu-Fire 40 amp 3 phase system in it and I have never had an issue since then.

How To: Charging System Upgrade 40 Amp 3 Phase

Does anyone actually agree with me that this is actually what exploded on my bike?I'm mechanically inclined, but I'm NOT a mechanic....I build homes..Thats why my name is BUILDEM...it's a slogan for my company..Which is shitty due to the economy right now..I like the Compu fire upgrade but I dont want to replace all of that and it not be my problem...

Buildem,
if you suspect your VR is crapped out on you, perform voltage checks at the stator plug (AC) and at the battery (DC), ensuring that both, the AC & DC voltages are there and rise with RPM.

Check your voltages and resistance readings using these two threads and posts from Night train and Ohmster as a guidelines.

Night Trains Tech Tip of the week

Battery not charging when running

hope this helps!!

You mean with the bike running? It wont start at all.It wants 2 hit at the starter but it just bumps 1 time and does nothing after that...like i said I'm not a mechanic...Only mechanically inclined...
